Looking for family. Last known address was in the village of Szkodna. My grandfather's sister Honorata married Antoni Szcepanek. They had 4 children, Julianna, Josefa, Joanna, and Karol.
I know there were relatives still in the village in the early 1980's.

To be honest now, i have found out already what is related to that address and i dont think it was the one anyone would be in in the time years im looking at, its just records that might reveal some more names or places of birth in Poland as i beleive Walenty and Zofia met and married there before moving to Poland. They had 13 kids in all, only 3 kids of the 13 went to America again in the 30's. No idea for why they did this, and information about them is sort or lost.

I would to somehow get hold of Walenty and Zofia's marriage records and two of the 2 of the missing three plus the Brother of Walenty who lived with them in the 1910 Census:

Walenty Zięba (Valentine Ziemba). Born 27/11/1885, Galicja, Poland and Zofia Mleczko (Sophie Mleczko). Born 12/05/1887 married in rougly 1907 in the US, very possibly the state of Ohio.

(The Brother of Walenty) Jan Zięba (John Ziemba). Born 1890 in Galicja, Poland. Lived in Lorain Ohio of 1910.

Stanisław Zięba. Born April 07 1912, Lorain, Ohio. (Known on US records as maybe Stanley Ziemba)
Anna Zięba. Born 1909 Lorain, Ohio. ( Either on records as Anna/Annie Ziemba)

Ive raided Goolge search and the Ancestry.com site for search under loads of variations but still i have hit a wall with what im after unless the cleveland Diocese finds what i was looking for from my request.

It's very common for immigrants to the U.S. (from any country) to "Anglicize" their names, particularity before 1900. If I remember correctly, Kwiat means "Flower" in Polish, so "Rose" would be natural way for someone to make their name better understood in English....

I don't know his rank, only his unit: Captain Wydzga's company of the 4th Lancers Regiment

BTW, here is the church where he is buried: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Rosemond&GSbyrel=all&GSdy=1906&GSdyrel=in&GSob=n&GRid=44541795&df=all&

From what I can tell, John's father didn't fight in the uprising, he had been wounded badly in 1813 so he may have been unable to fight because of his old wounds.

Subject: STARSOLLA / STARYSOLLER / STARISSOLER / STAROSOLER

Question:
The STARSOLLA'S (or any similar spellings) from TARNOPOL, Galicia =

Can anyone link-up SUSSIE STARISSOLER (1831-1876) or descendents with
SCHULIM HERSCH STAROSOLER (1814-1879) or his descendents?

I have two different trees. The one I can directly ascend to from myself is
to SUSSIE (Tarnopol) with only 6 people and some members of their families.

I have another tree with dozens of people and some members of their families
in the SCHULIM HERSCH tree (Zbaraz).

I am sure there are brothers and sons who link them up, but I can't find it!

Also, in the Zbaraz tree, we have two different SAMUEL'S : STARYSOLLER
(1874-?) who married twice. He took his 2nd wife (Alte CZYGLIK),his first
wife's sister, plus many children to New York (c1911). The other Samuel is
STAROSOLER (1876-?) with a different named wife (Anna) who also went to New
York.
Could they possibly be the same person, with Alte anglicising her name to
Anna?
They are both linked to CHAIM WOLF STARISSOLER (1858-1911) who was the son
of SCHULIM HIRSCH.

                                      Hi Gilberto,
I am going to order the LDS films for Zadowice and see what turns up. I live in Phoenix Arizona and have access to a number of Family History Libraries. I am going to order those today because I can't wait to see what I find out or at least can rule something out.

Good news on the maternal side. I found the ship's manifest for my maternal grandfather. I was searching under his full surname which he used most often, never thinking he would have used the shortened version on his arrival. But there he was Jan Kloss (instead of Kloszewski), meeting his brother Antoni Kloss and going to Erie, PA. It is him and I am happy to finally be making progress on this side of the family also.

I need to get a copy of the ship's manifest the one online is too difficult to read the place of birth. My mother says he was from Lwow but I'm not sure.

Can you scan and attach the bio page? Myself or others on this forum could decipher what google can't. The time period of his leaving for the US had many more as well. Chicago's "Polish Downtown" started up about 1820 and was really booming in 1840 with part of the community becoming americanized and part working toward a free polish homeland where they could one day return. Many military and other professionals were within the community.

My father was a POW as a Belgian, Koln was where the British liberated him from. From the information I have Grossessen was near Leipzig, Sachsen being on the other side from Hesse. I am told that the Kaiser's forces had POW camps for Russian troops and they would have to work the Lignite mines. A WWI POW record or a Russian draft record from Konskie would fill a few blanks.

                                      Ute,

I spent several hours searching through the 1900 census. They are available on the FamilySearch.org. I did not have much luck. A few years ago I tried to collect census records for most of the direct and near relatives in my lines, so I had probably already spent more than a few hours looking for Joseph Klimowski back then.

I appreciate all the work and thinking everyone on here has done with this problem. I did not expect it to be such a difficult question. I'll keep looking, but this is starting to look like another one that I'll have to put in my "brick wall" pile until I can find some other information to help with this search.
Carole, my grandfather does have pa on the 1930 census I will definitely have to explore that option and yes I am suspect that she was from Warsaw, considering that none of the children could spell her name the same who knows what they were saying about the town she came from. My grandfather's name was John (Jan) Kloszewski much more commom so I have lots to choose from but no direct hits yet.

I have 4 polish grandparents, 3 of which were deceased by the time I was born. Most of my aunts and uncles are dead also and my mother is the only living child out of 9, I am pulling as much info from her as I can. I will definitely pursue the naturalization paperwork option, I haven't done any of that yet.

Ute, the majority of the addresses on your map indicate the neighborhood once known as West Town. Realtors had divvied up the area and refer to some of it as Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, etc. The Fay st. address would be smack dab in the middle of the Kennedy Expressway, prior to November 29th, 1963 known as the Northwest Expressway. It would have been a short walk to St. John Cantius from there. If you notice a strange hook to the Expressway, that was by intervention from Congressmen Rostenkowski and Lechowicz to save St. Stanislaus Kostka from being razed to make way for the new road. To this day anyone travelling down the Kennedy (I90/94) southbound past North Ave. see the corner of the church almost jumping distance from the edge of the road.
