I just mailed you the birth cert of Leon Waksmunski and an old map of the district of Nowy Targ through 'Private Messages' on this forum. I also sent the Draft Registration Cards for

Waksmunski, Frank John, PA, b. 1896;
Waksmundzki, Andrew Anthony, IL, b. 1885;
Waksmundzki, Joseph, IL, b. 1893;
Waksmunski Joseph John, PA, b. 1893
Waskmunski, Joseph S., PA, b. 1892;
Waksmunski, George, PA, b. 1888.

Perhaps there is a connection between the PA Waksmunskis and your greatgrandfather.

Hi James,
I am curious about your experience with the Polish State Archives. What was that experience like? When you emailed your request to the archive, did they respond for free, or did they ask you to send money to cover the research fees? If so, how did you get the money to them from the US?

James, you have probably already done this, but I'll mention it for others who might read this:
Since I also live here in the United States, the first place that I look for church records is the LDS family history center.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

I use a KEYWORD search, not a place search. I have had better luck finding place information using the KEYWORD search.
The first time that I ordered films, I was a little intimidated by the whole process, but it turned out to be quite easy.

Once I determined that there were some church records for my village at the LDS Family History Library, I printed out the film notes with the details and film numbers. I then searched for my nearest LDS Family history center: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

I called my nearest center and spoke the volunteer who instructed me to come in and order my films in person. The fee was about 6 dollars per film. After a few weeks, the films go back, unless you renew them for the same price. After you pay to renew them 2 times, the films become "indefinate" and stay at your local center.

Within a few weeks, the films arrived at the center and I was allowed to view them for free on their microfilm viewer.
My church records were in Latin with some notes in Polish. However, it didn't take long to figure out the basic information. The dates are quite clear and the last names are not hard to find. I also met several nice people there who helped me and shared some valuable hints.

By the way, you do not have to be Morman to visit the LDS Family History Center. Their collection has more than just church records on microfilm.

Emmitt Smith sets out to discover his slavery roots. He will travel across the U.S. and all the way to the African coast to reveal important answers about his slave ancestry — and his own identity. Lisa Kudrow calls Emmitt's episode the most compelling of the seven.

There are plenty of records from Ciemniewko praish in Polish State Archives, branch in Mlawa http://www.warszawa.ap.gov.pl/angielski/mlawa/mlawa.html .

I have positive experience with contacting them via e-mail (in Polish). Try to write to them what you need by this e-mail: apw.mlawaATwarszawa.ap.gov.pl (replace AT by @) .

For all contacting Polish State Archives very helpful may be James' article, which can be found here: http://polishorigins.com/document/archives_practical_hints .

Without any written records showing place of origin or last residence of Theodore nobody is able to help you, especially with ancestor bearing such common surname as Wiśniewski (which actually derives from cherry). There is no such place in Poland as Cherry Valley.

I recently received word from my local Latter Day Saints Family History Center that some of my microfilm requests were waiting for me to reveiw. I only had time to look at one roll, so I chose FHL INTL Film 2003618 containing:
Births (Huta Różaniecka) 1849-1903
Marriages (H. Różaniecka) 1866-1935
Deaths (Huta Różaniecka) 1845-1945

I was disappointed that I did not find any of the ancestors I was looking for: Mary Rebizant (born around 1892); Anna Rebizant (born 1895); Alice Rebizant (born 1898); Piotr Rebizant (born around 1887); or Alexandra Rebizant (born around 1900). Both Anna and Alice clearly indicated on their social security applications and other documents that they were from Huta Różaniecka. I did find one family named Rebizant, but I don't have enough information to tie them to my ancestors yet. This is the first time that I've had to reconsider this and think about the surrounding smaller villages.

I am quite lucky that jarekg told me about the village Rebizanty, for I did not know that it existed (a perfect example of why this forum is so valuable to me). I will now search nearby villages on the films and then order the records for the village Rebizanty as jarekg suggested above. Please leave me a message on this thread if you have any Rebizant family information.

Does anyone know when the village Rebizanty was formed and if the village name has changed. I was wondering because of the information at this link. See item 129: http://prawo.lex.pl/serwis/du/2001/1772.htm
The google translation is not very clear.

Thanks!

                                      Hi Diedre,

It took me awhile to figure out the location of my ancestral home, but I eventually did before I went to Poland. It made my trip so much more meaningful to be able to go to the village where my family actually lived.

Is this your posting at ancestry?
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.ceeurope.poland.unknown/21442/mb.ashx

It would be helpful if you could provide more details on this PolishOrigins forum so that readers here can help you without repeating what others wrote at ancestry.com. There is a wonderful group of members here who are very helpful and I trust that you will get several good leads soon.

I think it would be most helpful to state where you located the information that you already have.

Good luck! I would love to hear about your trip once you visit Poland!

The information that you want is probably in the Polish national archives. There was a census around 1880 for Odrowaz and this info is in the archive. I only know this because another PolishOrigins member had census info about his family that a cousin received from the Archives in Krakow about 20 years ago. You have some compelling information to indicate that Fabian came from the Podhale area, but there is still some question about his actual birth location - Pieniazkowice or Zaluczne. I do not know if either of these villages also had census - but 1880 is too early for Fabian. Perhaps his father would be included.

I am curious what you have found so far - have you had any luck finding death certificates or death announcements for Fabian or his father John (Jan Kanty) in the Dziennik Chicagoski Death Notice Index 1930 – 1971? Did you receive any info about Fabian and his Haller's Army enlistment with Dr. Valasek? Since Fabian came to the US not long before he enlisted, the information that he provided at that time might be more reliable than what is on his death certificate (where the info was provided by someone else, like his child who may not have known the name of Fabian's birthplace).

I believe there was a Kocanda who served as parish priest in Odrowaz. I'll check on that and see what I can find for you. Quite possibly a relation to Fabian........?
I posted an 1893 birth document of Emilia Krampitz written in Cyrillic back in Sept (see first page, 3d posting). I don't want to post it again as it's been translated.

BUT - I had request, a valid one too, to show the results of the translation of that Russian language document. I've tried deciphering it myself but can't make much of handwritten Russian. I've attempted some other translations of German and Polish documents and being able to compare the original language vs the Englush translation could help learn to read other similar records.

So, go back to page 1, either print the original and this translation below, or open two browser windows and see what you can learn.

Good luck
Bob K.
In 2002 there were 1691 people using the surname Data living in Poland, deployed mainly in south-eastern (Rzeszów area) and northern Poland.

I have no Polish blood in my family, but my wife is 50% Polish. When we got married, she was sort of interested in genealogy, but she really didn’t have a burning need to know who she was until last year. You see, during that year, I was overseas and while I was gone, my wife kept herself out of trouble – well, maybe got herself into trouble -- researching her family. Her grandfather was born in Poland, so she exhausted her US information quickly and was looking for Polish sources of information. The Morman's did not have microfilm of church records for her ancestral village and no one online had any information for her. She was frustrated that she could not access any records from here in the US. She soon started looking for a guided trip to find her Poland village.

I wanted to go to Germany that summer, but my wife really wanted to see where her ancestors lived. I imagined a boring trip and I was hoping for lots of beer! She was searching for her Polish roots. As it turned out, we had a great time. There are no online records from her ancestral village, so we planned a trip with Zenon and went right to the village when we got off the plane. Neither of us spoke Polish, but it was easy because Zenon met us at the airport and served as our Polish interpreter.

I would not say that it is easy to get records, but it is definitely worth a trip if you want the information. Just come prepared and bring your camera, and a voice recorder....... and plan to donate some money to the church. If you have to invest in one thing for your trip, make it a decent camera. The second thing I would invest in is a digital voice recorder and turn it on as much as possible. If you are permitted to take photos of documents, take as many as you can, and take more than one photo of each document in case one comes out blurry. Take photos of everything that you can because you will regret it if you don’t. My wife took photos of as many pages in record books that she could because we just did not have time to read and research every name as we read the books. She ended up with several blurry images, but most came out good. The real work started when she got home and began to really study the records and finding family connections.

Our trip turned out to be very very interesting and Zenon worked with us to combine research with lots of side trips. Although we were American tourists in Poland, the side trips had special meaning for my wife because we visited places where her ancestors lived, worked and played. The best part was watching her excitement when she connected some information that she found in the church records with a grave at the cemetery that then led to a meeting with a living relative. That is when the real fun began. I never saw my wife at a loss for words, but she was speechless when she stood face to face with a direct descendent of her great-grandfather’s brother. And my wife doesn’t drink, so watching her drink Polish vodka with her new cousin was something I won’t forget. Her cousin assured us that Polish vodka doesn’t leave you with a hangover. I had my doubts, but he was right! I thought she would be nursing a massive headache the next day, but to my surprise she was good to go!

It’s not really cheap to travel to Europe, but the exchange rate in Poland is pretty good. We got about 3 zloty for each American dollar while we were there (but the dollar started falling at the end of our trip). The real bargain was for people with Euros. I think the Euro was buying 6 or more zloty. Our room with a private bath was only about 20 zloty a night and each meal only came out to be about 4 American dollars per person. These were not tourist areas, but when we left Zenon and went on to Krakow, it was still relatively inexpensive compared to other European countries that use Euros. We spent 7 days in Krakow on our own and it was no problem that we didn’t speak Polish. Almost everyone there speaks English.

So, yes, if you can’t find what you need from home, plan a trip to Poland. Find a good guide like Zenon who will interpret for you and speak on your behalf to gain access to records. Plan a personalized tour of ancestral Poland - it is easier than you think. And you will have a great time ---- even if you are not Polish.
