As a second generation Polish / American , researching my family has caused me to read numerous books about Poland's history, and some of it's people, in order for me to have a better understanding of the life my ancestors lived. I'll list several of them that have left an impression on me, for the struggles they endured, and yet ultimatly, for the joy they found.

God's Playground - Norman Davies
White Eagle , Red Star - Norman Davies
Rising 44 - Norman Davies
The Liberation of One - Romuald Spasowski
The Defiant - Shalom Yuran
Story of a Secret State - Jan Karski
The Pianist - Wladyslaw Szpilman
" Them " - Stalin's Polish Puppets - Teresa Toranska ( 1988 )
The Modern Polish Mind - short stories - edited by Maria Kuncewicz (1962)
A Scrap of Time - Ida Fink - short stories
Poland - James Michener
Pilsudski - Grace Humphrey ( 1936 )
Poland - It's People, Society, Culture - Clifford Barnett ( 1958 )

Thanks Zenon for yor suggestions

For all interested in these books, most of them can be found on Amazon.com . I also added them as well as other recommended books, dvd's and music to the list which can be found on the left margin of our website, below menu.

I'm interested in learning about life in Southern Poland (below Krakow) during the 1700's and 1800's. My grandmother was from the Myslenice area and my grandfather was from the Nowy Targ area. Does anyone have a recommendation on a good book or website that would chronicle what life was like in these areas? Both of my grandparents worked on farms so I'm particularly interested in what farm life was like.
