Post subject: name confusion:
Hi,
In researching John Was and his family in Lekno, I found that John and Catharina Kryzianka were married in 1835, In 1836
with the 1st child, Catherine was Jezewiak (and a sponsor was Jezewiak); in 1838 Catherine had no family name. In 1841 and 1844 her family name was Kreskowiak; in 1848 - no family name; in 1851 her family name was Sobkowiak.
There were no deaths or a second marriage for John until 1852. So - do I look for Catherine's family as Kryziak? Or could Kryzianka have been Kreskowiak? There are both Kryszak's and Kreskowiak's in Wagrowiec area according to Poznan Project. What is most likely, please?
Thanks,

Hi,
Could you clarify please?
Was or Waś or Wąs ?
Waś - 1584 persons // the etymology could be wasz = your, see http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bazyli
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/wa%25C5%259B.html
Wąs - 4055 persons // it means mustache
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/w%25C4%2585s.html
Was - 5 persons
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/was.html
Which Lekno ? Łękno or Łekno ?
(1)
Łękno
765 osób
woj. wielkopolskie
pow. średzki
gmina Zaniemyśl
(2)
Łekno
732 osoby
woj. wielkopolskie
pow. wągrowiecki
gmina Wągrowiec
(3)
Łekno
441 osób
woj. zachodniopomorskie
pow. koszaliński
gmina Będzino

My first glimpse opinion is that:
Kreskowiak and Sobkowiak are definitely Polish names.
Jezewiak could be a "deciphering transformation".
The same for Kryziak - it's deciphering transformation, not Polish.
It could be Krysiak; then Krysianka is a suffix to say daughter of Krysiak.
Kreskowiak is a name suggesting a person from Kresy, frontier (East frontier).
Kresy, Krysy, depending on spelling.
Krysiak - like Krysia, diminutive of Krystyna, name derived from Krystyna?
or Krysiak - like Krys, Krysy, Kresy, a person from Kresy?
Do you have scans with original handwritten names?
Best,
Elzbieta

Elzbieta,
Sorry, I missed some information. My g-g- grandfather is Stanislaw W*s, raising his family in Slupowo,
Smogulec, Wagrowiec, and I have film ordered to learn more about him..
Indications are that John W*s, from *ekno, Wagrowiec powiat, is Stanislaw's brother. Before I put John into my database, I wanted to know his wife's correct family name. The marriage record is attached. Thanks.

Sheep17,
The record as you posted it cuts off Katarzyna's(Catarina in Latin) maiden name, The last word in the scan is "virginem" which is the Accusative Singular of the noun "virgo" which in this context means "a maiden" or in other words, a single young lady. The way the entry must read is ...benedixi matrimonium inter Joannem Was...and Catarinam (her maiden name) virginem (I blessed the marriage between Jan Was...and Katarzyna (maiden name), a single young woman.
