TO anyone that can help or give me some interesting info. My 3 great grandmother Carolina Geiger Hoffman was born to a mother with the last name Wasilin. I do not know her given name.. The suffix -in on a surname was often used in Germany to indicate a female. Which than would make her surname Wasil and I really don't know if she would be Polish, It definitely does not sound German at all. The -in suffix was only used for surnames as well. If anyone could help me with the last name or give me some info. I really do not know anything about it.

Forgot to add she was born in Germany around maybe 1795 give or take my 3x grandmother was born in 1819 so figure she was about 20 - 30 I don't really know.

Hi,

There is more than 1000 Wasil in today Poland, so it is Polish name too:
https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Wasil

Wasil writes Василий in Russian, in Polish Bazyli, in English Basil, German Basileus, French Basile.

Wasil like Wassily Kandinsky

Stankiewicze says the same about etymology, adding that the name is of Greek origin, meaning "wódz, król = chief, king"
http://www.stankiewicze.com/index.php?kat=44&sub=555
//
Wasil - od imienia Bazyli, notowanego w Polsce od XIII wieku. Imię pochodzenia greckiego od basileus ‘wódz, król’. Na Rusi miało formę Wasilij, Wayl.

Best,
Elzbieta
