Thank you in advance.
Need some help with a few words, It's number 16 on the right hand side of the page. I sent the whole page. Okay I cropped it. (I didn't read the directions!)

So far I have: The 16th child born in Poguten, born in the 7th hour in the morning (7:00 am) on the 18 of February, 1852. Baptized with the name of Conrad Fridrick by Rev. Tipplet. Parents are: The Schumann? (Shoemaker?) Johan Zynda and Franciska born Dawicka. Sponsors: (Occupation?) Fredrich Stephen with? Mariana Bukowska (from?) Poguthen

Hi Louie,
You did a fantastic job translating this document. I think you have the important facts correct. I tried looking at the words you are having difficulty with, and I find that this particular writer has a bit of extra swirly endings on his words that make it so hard to be certain of what he is writing. For example, the word between Fridrich Stephan and Mariana Bukowska is likely to be "und" ("and") but the last letter of his word curls up in a way that does not look like what I expect from the letter "d." Nonetheless, I think you have the meaning of it right. As for the occupations, I was not able to decipher those, either, but I can tell you that Schumann is not the word for shoemaker. It would be Schuhmacher or even Schuster. Both of those words, like many words for occupations, end in the letters "er" and I do not see this word as having an "er" ending. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Best,
Sophia

Is there a kind soul out there who can help me translate this German-language marriage record from Chodzież (Kolmar)? It's the second record (act 44) in the attached image.

My knowledge of Polish and Russian isn't of much help in this case!

I'm particularly curious if this record gives any indication of where the bride and groom were born.

Thank you!! Smile

Hi Nancy,

Here is my best effort at translating the column headings from the Prussian municipal statistics table that you had posted. I find it interesting, the way in which they probed not only what someone's native language was, but whether they were bilingual with German and some other language both counting as their mother tongue.

1. Laufende Nummer: Consecutive numbers
2. Namen der Gemeinde einheiten nebst Zahl der Wohnplätze: Names of communities along with number of residences
3. Gesamtflächeninhalt: Total acreage (units here are hectares)
4. Durchschnittlicher Grundsteuer Reinertrag auf 1 ha: Average property tax on the profit from 1 hectare (units here are in Marks)
5. Bewohnte Wohnhäuser: occupied houses
6. Andere bewohnte Baulichkeiten, Hütten, Zelte, Schiffe, Wagen u. dergl. : other inhabited buildings, huts, tents, ships, wagons and the like

Heading over columns 7 and 8: Haushaltungen: Households

7. Gewöhnliche haushaltungen von 2 und mehr Personen: ordinary households of 2 or more people
8. Einzellebende mit eigener hauswirtschaft: single individual living with their own homemaker [or perhaps it means single individual living as their own household]

Heading over columns 9-21: Ortsanwesende Bevölkerung am 1. Dezember 1905: population of places on December 1, 1905

9. Überhaupt: all together

Heading over columns 10 and 11: Darunter befinden sich: among these

10. Männliche Personen: males
11. Aktive Militärpersonnen: active military personnel

Heading over columns 12-21: Religions-bekenntnis: Religious denominations

Heading over columns 12-16: Evangelische: Protestant

12. Überhaupt: all together

Heading over columns 13-16: davon sprechen (Muttersprache): of which speak (mother tongue)

13. Deutsch: German
14. Polnisch: Polish
15. Eine andere Sprache: another language
16. Deutsch und eine andere Sprache: German and another language

Heading over columns 17-21: Katholische: Catholic

17. Überhaupt: all together

Heading over columns 18-21: davon sprechen (Muttersprache): of which speak (mother tongue)

18. Deutsch: German
19. Masurisch: Masurian
20. Eine andere Sprache: another language
21. Deutsch und eine andere Sprache: German and another language

22. Andere Christen: Other Christian [meaning, any Christian denomination that is not Protestant or Catholic)
23. Juden: Jews
24. Anderen und unbestimmten bekenntnisse: other and unspecified religious denominations

Heading over columns 25 and 26: Kirchspiel: [I do not understand this.]

25. Evangelisch: Protestant
26. Katholisch: Catholic

27. Standesamtsbezirk: District registry office
28. Stadtbezw. Amtsbezirk: City district office [unsure of this one]

I hope this is useful for you.

Best,
Sophia

Sophia,

Once I plug in the data for my villages of Bialutten (now Białuty) and Gross Lensk-(now Wielki Lęck) your kind assistance will indeed provide me a small window into the world of my Prussian forbears.

MUCH appreciated,

Looking for some assistance with this German script. This is not in the usual template form, as I think this is a stillborn child. Just want to confirm that. I have another birth from this date and a death 5 months later of what I think is this child's twin.

regards, Dave

Thank you for starting this thread, it makes things a little easier to be able to go to one website.

I received a copy of my mother's Interview for resettlement dated in 1948. Some of it is written in English and some in German. I have attached two pages that are written in German and would appreciate someone being able to transcribe this for me.

Thanking you in advance.

Regards
Helena

Dear members!
We present here the German – English dictionary prepared by our former guest and forum member Louis Welna.

This is a vocabulary of words from German records available on LDS microfilms. The list has been collected during many years of Louie’s genealogy research, and now he decided to share this with others.
Here you can read Louie’s blog written during his Genealogy Tour in Poland in 2011: “Sitting Down in My GGGrandfather’s House”: http://blog.polishorigins.com/category/louis-tour/.

You can explore the dictionary on our website: http://polishorigins.com/german-records-vocabulary/ or download a pdf file (attached below).
I've posted this also as a sticky note in section Research in Poland (to make it easily accessible): http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?t=4003

We hope that this will help you with your research, especially since we do not have any volunteer who would do the German translations more regularly.
Aga

Hello!

I am trying to translate a section of the following 2 church records: 1) A section of a death record for Rosalia Lewandowski, Anton's daughter. 2) Death record for Anton Lewandowski. I split this record into two sections so it would be easy to read.

Thank you so much!
Karen

Hi Tracy,

The German version:

Herrn Karl Lemberg
per. Ad. [resse] Herrn Wagner
Bäckermeister
Meseritz

Grüße Familie W.[agner] von mir.
Neutomischel, d.[en] 4.9.1912
Lieber Karl! und Otto
Deinen Brief erhalten und teile
Dir mit, daß der Anzug 36
Mark kostet. Kurt ist schon bald
acht Tage in Postdam [Potsdam?] auf
seine alte Stelle wieder [.] die Freu [croosed out]
Freude war wieder sehr groß
daß er hin konnte. Mit den
Gesellen ist Pappa ja so zu
frieden[.] die Hauptsache er ist
sehr willig. Wenn Du mal für
Bütel was mitbringst blos
was nötiges, kein Spielzeug.
Viele Grüße von Deinen Eltern und
Geschwistern Deine Mutter.

The English one:

Mr. Karl Lemberg
c/o Mr. Wagner
Baker [master craftsmann]
Meseritz

Give my greetings to the W[agner] family.
Neutomischel, the 4th September 1912
Dear Karl! and Otto
Received your letter and tell you that the suit costs 36 mark [Reichsmark]. Kurt will soon be eight days back in his old position in Potsdam. It was a great pleasure that he could return. Dad is so pleased with the qualified craftsmen. The main thing [is] he is willing [committed]. If you happen to bring along something for Bütel [seems to be a nickname] only needful things, no toys. Many greetings from your parents and siblings. Your mother.

Best regards,

Dave,

It says "... ein Kind männlichen Geschlechts geboren und daß dieses Kind in der Geburt verstorben sei ...", so yes, it is a stillborn child.

Hi,

I know that this is family records translation thread, but I am not able to find general german translation thread. I need to translate from german a guide for map of Polhora (now Slovakia, Orawa) - left below part of the map (link), numbers 1 to 5 (uploaded picture 1). Number 5 is the most important for me.

I would like to ask you to translate for me picture 2. I want to translate words around building nr.5 inside red circle.

Map should describe border checkpoints with Galicia.

Here is a link for original map from hungarian archive.

Here is description of the map

Thanks.

Best regards,

PS:

Polhora, Sihelnia, Mutne, Lipnica are villages here in Orawa.
