Part 4. Image Editing and Cataloging Programs and Genealogy

"As you collect more and more data about your family you will also collect more and more documents, old photos, on-line images, etc. The obvious questions then become – What to do with all of these images? How do you file them? How do you name them? How do you fix problems that may occur with older photos (color fading, scratches, tears, etc.)? In this article I will attempt to answer, in general terms, the above questions in order to give you a starting point in developing your own image cataloging/fixing scheme.

The very first thing I would like to say is “SCAN EVERYTHING”!! (...)"

Part 5. Backing Up your Files

Have you ever talked to someone who was crying because he had lost his data from hard drive on which he had spent hours or, in case of genealogy, even years of hard work Question Or maybe you experienced that personally...Question

In his next article Bob presents how effectively and almost automatically backing up of your genealogy (and all other) files. (After reading it I am going to start using one of this freeware programs in which I am especially interested in this “incremental backup” function.)

Mashup! Merging Ancestry.com, Family Tree Maker 2009, and MyFamily.com by Ceil Wendt Jensen.

I would like to draw your attention to a very interesting article from AncestryMagazine.com written by well-known certified genealogist, specializing in Polish ancestry, Ceil Wendt Jensen. In the article Ceil describes how she combines functions and abilities of constantly improved genealogy software and websites containing huge genealogy databases on an specific example of Martha Stewart genealogy research.

Below one of the first paragraphs:

“(...)Recently, I read that Martha Stewart was visiting Poland, the birthplace of her grandparents. Being from a Polish line myself, I decided to see what I could find out about her lineage—who knows, maybe we shared an ancestral village or two. (…)

Since my goal was to compare ancestral villages, I needed to find Martha’s immigrant ancestors’ names and ship manifests. Now with new information, I returned to the Web Search page and searched again. This time, I found additional documents, including a World War II draft registration listing a birthplace of Kopki, Poland, for Frank Kostyra. In the 1930 U.S. census, Frank Kostyra is listed as head of Edward’s family, 50 years old, and with a listed place of birth as Austrian-Kopke, and an immigration date of 1905.(...)”

I will have to read all those links you supplied, Zenon. I just started my family tree at Ancestry.ca (two actually - a Kempa one and a Dolar one). You don't get near as many results using Ancestry's free search service but do get much more when you buy a subscription.

I bought a one month international subscription. I'm disappointed that there are no Polish or Ukrainian records but I've found a few German passenger lists that were helpful and ship manifests for granparents arrivals. I'd already found the ship manifests for my Kempa grandparents arrivals a few years ago using the Ellis Island website search (free) but at Ancestry, I could "attach" them to the persons in my family tree. I also found grandpa Dolar's death record, landing info in Canada, and oldest aunt's marriage record using my subscription. None of those things showed up in their free search service (including the passenger lists that are free at Ellis Island's website).

So the "international" subscription still gives you mostly U.S. data (and useful for me, also Canadian data). Not much that you could consider "international" unless you are British.

The simple reason of that is the fact that there are still very few Polish records digitized...
