Post subject: Origin of surname Hreben
Information i have for our last name Hreben:
Peter Hreben(my Grandfather) born in Grodno in 1893.
really trying to find if our last name was changed or really is Hreben.
emigrated to the US in 1915.
Says he is Polish on paperwork and i understand Grodno in the 1890's was a part of Poland and is now Belarus.
I am assuming the record is in Russian are far as the names?
I will try a translator program online to try a decipher.
Thank you very much for the help
You can find his marriage record here an see the spelling of his surname Metrical books (familysearch.org) (record number 10)
I have found some records for Michael, Andrew and Nicolas Hreben/Greben on FamilySearch. They were brothers and they immigrated to the U.S. from Siehniewicze and Grodno area, so maybe they were somehow related to Peter. In these records you can find both versions of the surname: Greben and Hreben, so one of them should be the correct spelling you are looking for. _________________ Monika
