I'm looking for info on the family surname Ardickas or Ardicki. GGF Antanis emigrated to the US in 1886 from an unknown location in "Russland", but I have whom I believe is his brother, Jergi Ardicki, as leaving Suwalki in 1882.

Hello,

I found over 30 family trees on Ancestry.com with your ancestors. One of them, called the Hardy tree, had documents indicating his date and place of birth being

27 Jun 1858
Baltrakis Village
Vilkaviškis Municipality
Marijampole County
Lithuania

This area was formerly part of Suwalki.

Here is one document- the Hamburg portion of his immigration voyage. The birth location is not spelled correctly, but it seems likely it is Baltrakis. Also, his surname is written as Arditzkes.

Do you have access to Ancestry? If so, you can view the Hardy tree - it is public.

Perhaps other members of the group can provide additional information.

Best,
Cynthia

Mattias,
In addition to the trees on Ancestry that Cynthia referred to there is also this one that shows Anthony Ardickas born in 1866 (possibly your great grandfather Antanis) and his nine siblings, children of Joseph Ardickas and Barbara Viktoreviciute. Note, entries with a plus before them have more information if you click on the name. I think of online trees as a starting point from which I can try to verify information since accuracy and interpretation of data may vary.

Doing a little research, I also found the following info, in case it could be of help to you.

From what I can see, many with the Ardickas name Americanized it to Hardy. I some instances they used the name interchangeably – like Hardy for the census and Ardickas for burial. If your great grandfather married a Rosie Coyle, it appears that he was going by Hardy by the time of his marriage in 1891

There is an obituary for George (Hardy) Ardickas obituary on November 5, 1949 in The Republican and Herald - Pottsville, Pennsylvania – with lots of detail. It mentions that he was born in Lithuania and gives names and locations of living siblings. A copy of the obituary is clipped on the site.

Based on age and age of immigration, this George Ardickas may match up with an immigration record for Jerge in 1890

Church records can be a treasure with names of parents and sometimes birth or baptism location info.
You can check the Diocese of Allentown to see if they have records. If this branch of your family may have identified as Lithuanian, St. George’s Roman Catholic Church Shenandoah, PA (now demolished) may be worth checking out with the diocese.

Good luck!
Diane
