Post subject: Shcholka (derived from Pszczolka?)
Domainreg,
It has been a long while since you posted this question but you may still find this useful.
According to a map of Polish surnames ( https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/ ), based on an official register of citizens from around the year 2000, there were no people with the name Shcholka or its equivalent Polish spelling: Szczolka (or Szczółka – with Polish diacritic marks). The name does not feature in Hoffman’s book on Polish surnames either.
Let me give you my informed guess: Shcholka may originated from the name Pszczółka (the o has an accent and the l is crossed with a slash). Without “Polish letters” it is spelled Pszczolka.
It is not a very common name, but were just under 1000 people with this surname at the turn of the 21st century. See: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Pszcz%C3%B3%C5%82ka
On this map you can see the frequency of the surname in the particular areas. There were more than 60 people with this surname in the Zywiec, Bielsko-Biala, Cieszyn and Oswiecim counties in southern Poland.
Here is the explanation of how Pszczółka may have become Shcholka:
During or after emigration, the surname Pszczółka becomes Pszczolka – the “Polish letters” disappear. That’s pretty obvious.
English speakers are unable to pronounce Pszczolka so the p is dropped and the spelling is Anglicized, which results in Shcholka.
