Post subject: meaning of terms on records
Dear P.O. friends,
After getting my great-great grandparents records translated it lists some terms that I am trying to find out what they would have meant in the Polish-Lithuanian sense in the 1880's. The record lists my great-great grandfather Adolf Szymkiewicz as a Burgher and his wife Jozefa Fronckiewicz as a Noble as well as her parents as noble. I know the situation of class in Poland was much different then other countries so I am guessing this "status" if it is status meant very little. The baptism record of my great grandmother Weronika in 1885 roughly a year later lists them as "Middle Class" inhabitants of the parish.
She married my great grandfather Jozef Michalkiewicz who was called a Peasant on records so I guess that this was not out of the ordinary and labels didn't mean much to the people themselves.
Any input would be appreciated.
