Post subject: Origins of the surnames Mikuta and Kozioł
I am interested in learning more about the surnames Mikuta and Kozioł. From reading William F. Hoffman's book on Polish Surnames: Origins and Meanings," I have surmised the following:
The last name "Mikuta," is most likely a patronymic surname derived from the given name "Mikołaj" [in English: Nicholas]. Btw., Mikuta is also spelled Mykota, Mikonta, and even Mekuchunka in some records. Not sure which one I should go by.
The name Kozioł derives from koza, meaning goat. Perhaps it was used to refer to a goatherd, or to someone who was thought to resemble a goat? I have only seen this name in one record thus far, and it is definitely spelled K o z i o ł
Any information would be most appreciated!

Your information is correct for both names (etymology Koza for Kozioł and Mikołaj for Mikuta).
Best,

That is good to know. I wonder whether the suffixes in these cases have any particular meaning. Such as "little Nicholas," or "Old Nicholas," or "son of Nicholas." Or have the names been changed to much to tell for sure? I tried to figure it out with Hoffman's book, esp. reading his v. 1 chapter 4, but was not really getting anywhere. _________________ Kristine

I would like to add that as a trivia about Kozioł surname a short information about my favorite Polish TV series called Ranczo (Ranch). It is story about a female American of Polish descent who inherits a small manor house in Polish countryside and decides to settle there. The main characters of the film are priest and mayor of the village (the second one becomes president of Poland in the last 10th season). These two characters of priest and mayor are twin brothers by the name Kozioł and their roles are performed by the same actor, Cezary Żak.
Our family has been watching it almost every evening although we saw it many times before. It is addictive in a very positive way, and no side effects beside good laugh .
This is official website of the series with its eposides as VOD, however I am not sure if it is available for watching outside of Poland: http://ranczo.tvp.pl/ .

Zenon,
Unfortunately the series is not licensed for viewing the USA. Szkoda. Perhaps it is available in some other countries outside of Poland.
Thanks for the post. It appears that it would be most enjoyable and perhaps someday it will be available here.
