Research notes
I am currently researching information about my maternal grandfather, Stefan Jozef Chomiak. In particular, I am interested in whether he was ukrainian or Polish, or possibly that he identified as Ukrainian but was a Polish citizen? Or that he lived in Poland but identified as and was of Ukrainian nationality.

What I know:

Stefan Jozef Chomiak was born on the 19 of March 1927.

He immigrated to Australia, arriving in Fremantle on the 19th of April 1949 on the ship Amarapoora which left from Naples, Italy. On the passenger records his birth place is listed as Milik, Poland, his religion as Roman Catholic and his profession as labourer.

He spoke Polish, and my Mum seems to think he served in the Polish army.

My mum also remembers that he said he was a displaced person for a time and lost contact with his family at 12 years old.

He attended a Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Perth, Australia, and was buried in the Ukrainian Orthodox part of the Karrakatta Cemetery in Perth.

In my Mum's baby book the family tree is listed as:

His Father: Janko Chomiak

Paternal Grandfather: Anton Chomiak

Paternal Grandmother: Marta

His Mother: Maria

Maternal Grandfather as Stefan Kulina

(These may be very wrong)
If anyone has even the tiniest bit of information I would love to hear from you because these are the only things I know.

Many many thanks, Megan May Payne
