Research notes My dzadziu recently passed away at the age of 97. We've always wondered about his last name, Gad. During WWII he was detained in Auschwitz (with tattoos). He is incredibly strong and has white blond hair. He says he grew up near the border of the Ukraine. I have pictures of him in the wheat field. He grew up extremely poor.

My baba was detained at a different camp during a raid at the age of 16, in a suburb of Warsaw. Her last name is also unusual, but I have seen the picture of gravestones bearing the name Surdyn. They met after liberation when they fled Poland, fearing the invading Russians. They then moved to Belgium and finally Canada. Much mystery surrounds many of their circumstances but we accept there was trauma and things you didn't talk about.
