I don't know which AP you referred to. Unless things have changed in recent years, I have always received a scanned copy of the original BDM record. In my case, AP Lodz, AP Torun, AP Mlawa and - if I correctly remember - AP Konin.

You can send money via Xoom.com with just an email address. All they would need to do is setup an account/register with Paypal.

portable scanner

Portable scanner is very useful if you meet family and they can show you old family photographs. Quality of scanning them is usually better than photographing. However, I am afraid that nobody will let you use your scanner to scan pages in old books... In this case good digital camera is most useful.

Spring travel to Poland

We very often organize and travel together with our guests to the area that you are planning to visit. This is region from which a great number of people emigrated at the breakthrough of 19th century. Now their grand- and great-grandchildren return to uncover their roots and hopefully meet relatives as you do .

Regarding Malbork, you are right that it is a long distance (about 6 hours 30 minutes' drive from Kolbuszowa).

If you are interested in castles you can follow the Eagles Nests Trail. It is a marked trail named after a chain of 25 medieval castles between Częstochowa and Kraków. We can show you 2 or 3 from all of them on the way back to Kraków. http://orlegniazda.pl/en-US.
Although these are castle of different character, old Polish forts built to protect Polish territory and trade tracks It is definitely closer than Malbork castle.

Even closer to Lutcza there are ruins of Kamieniec castle in Odrzykon: http://zamekkamieniec.iq.pl/ . For sure not so monumental and well-preserved as the one in Malbork but with a very interesting history. One of poests, Aleksander Fredro, was owner of it and based on true story which happened in this castle he wrote one of his best known comedies "Revenge": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zemsta .

From our experience we know that hand-made gifts, family trees, old family pictures are very welcome as gifts by families in Poland. Even simple things like alcohol for man and sweats for woman are good idea.

Hotel Suggestions

We stayed with our guests in the Hotel Dworek. It is nothing fancy but clean and they have nice service. And this is perfect location for spending time in Kolbuszowa .

Ambasadorski Hotel in Rzeszow is a high standard, perfectly located (on the old market square, very close to the State Archives) hotel.

Near the airport in Warsaw we recommend Courtyard Warsaw Airport. You just wake up, eat breakfast and walk a few minutes to the terminal. Also, a very good standard.

Hello,
I wanted to share perhaps a different way to get to Poland. We did this in 2014 and will do it again next spring. Go on a transatlantic cruise. Now, I will admit this is probably only practical for those with lots of vacation time or those who are retired. Here is how we did it:

2014- took the NCL Star from Miami to Copenhagen- stops in Azores, England, Sweden, and the Copenhagen. We flew on Norwegian Airlines to Krakow- very easy and inexpensive. We then took AirBerlin back home.

2016- we are taking the RCL Vision of the Seas from Tampa to Barcelona. We found a $53 pp flight on Norwegian Airlines to Warsaw. We will rent a car and then make our way to ancestral villages and other cities in Eastern Poland. We have a $426 pp flight back to Ohio from Warsaw. BTW- the cruise is $479 pp. It takes a lot of research to get things to work out. I recommend going to Poland in May as the weather is pretty nice, school is still in session and you have quite a bit of daylight. We found that the fall trip was nice, but the lack of "travel light" has an impact.

My sister and I were in Poland June 3-17, 2014. We stayed in Rzeszow at the Ambasadorksi Hotel, right on the square. It was excellent. We really liked Rzeszow, as it was a nice
break from the big cities. Also, we had relatives living there. During our whole trip to Poland, we had no problem with language. We were pleasantly surprised. I would recommend visiting
this city. There were good restaurants all around the square, beautiful church, good museum and underground caverns to visit. Also, it is not far from Lancut Castle.

I would like to visit Poland in September of 2013. I would like a tour like the Galacia tour but of the Silesia area. In addition I would hire a personal guide for a few days in the Lugnian, Murow area. Has anyone traveled in these areas?
