I'm sorry to report that a page by page review of the arriving ship's manifest at Ellis Island for my grandmother's immigration shows that she travelled alone. Rereading your posting that your Muszynska was born in Rypin indicates that she was from an entirely different province than my ancestor. I will however keep my eyes open for other Muszynskis and update you if I find anything concrete. Please do the same for me.

Jimgus: I am also searching for Muszynska's. My great grandmother was Porlgia/Pelegia Muszynska. She was born in 1877, so before your Muszynska's. Perhaps they are cousins of some sort?

I know her parents were listed on a death certificate as Walter Muszynski and Ann Kraczyur (which I am told is probably misspelled). On the documents I can find (death certificate), she mentions (along with siblings, Leonard, Henry, Mary) that she was born in Rypin.

I also believe another relative (uncle or cousin, perhaps) lived in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. His name is Aleksander and his sister was Julianna. They were born about ten years before Pelegia.

If any of these names are familiar to you, I'd love to touch base.

Your Grandfather made our day nice - happy you discover things, or just read them with other eyes. It's not easy to communicate with parents or children when not living in your birth country (I am speaking from my own experience), not to mention Cyrillic barrier.

I'm trying to narrow down the possible birthplace for my grandmother. There are so many places in Poland named Pawłowice. I suspect historically, there might have been even more, but don't know how to validate that. The two "closest" to Tury that I can find are in Gmina Krzyżanów (about 80 kilometers east) and Gmina Żerków (about 90 kilometers southwest). Do you have any thoughts on this conundrum?
Knowing nothing of how they came together, it's possible that she came from somewhere even further removed in Poland. What if it was an arranged marriage or she was a "mail-order" bride? What I do know is that she came to America with the intent of marrying him and the marriage took place in Pennsylvania. One more clue is that on their marriage license application, they listed themselves as being ethnically Kalish. With boundaries being somewhat fluid, that may not be much help.

I looked up Tury on Wikipedia, since I can't find it on my map of Poland. It shows as being part of Gmina Kościelec in Koło County.
What I found interesting is that I have a document from 1904, where my grandfather is applying for U.S.A. citizenship. There it says, in English,
that he was born in the village of Westura in the county of Cola in the Empire of Russia. In the past, I never could make sense of the info on this document, since Westura and Cola don't seem like Polish names to me. Plus the birth date given for my grandfather is way off from any others I've seen, including your finding. But that not withstanding, the witness is his brother John(Jan) and the residence address is consistent with what I know. So were Westura and Cola, the Anglicized versions of the Russian names for Tury and Koło? Was the clue "in front" of me all this time?

Good news !

I found the original birth record of Jozef Gostynski, son of Tomasz and Ludwika, born Osinska. The date is 26 December 1878 / 7 January 1879 - the first date is old Julian calendar used by Russians at that time, 12 days of difference with the current one used worldwide, so the birth date is 7 January 1879. That record is in archives for the year 1878 ...

With the evidence there is nothing for you in archives when digging for Konin, I started to search in other directions. It was quite a long walk, tried Morzyslaw without result (btw, the cemetery in Morzyslaw have an excel file with thousand of graves, described with names and dates, but nothing for you), until I understood I have to search for Krzymów.

Let me start with something I was not looking for - Chorzeń in archives, various issues:

I started with 1877, 1878, 1879 - only one year, 1878, is in archives with Roman-Catholic records.
It's in Cyrillic, but they give names in Latin for parents and baby name.
I figured out that instead of just searching for Gostyński, I will make a file with what is in Latin, and the place name. Made 130 records (of circa 200), and did not see any Gostyński, neither Chorzeń. Then looked up by the end, seeking for index. Found 1 Gostynski in birth records, and two Gostynski in death (Gostynski Teofil, Gostynska Helena).

At this stage I ask myself: why in Konin records I see only very few villages: Konin, Brzezno, Wilkowo, Glodno (and no Chorzen)?

By miracle this year is in Polish, I found 1 Gostynski in Konin, but not Jan, short info below:

Names are relatively easy, but dates, probably not surprisingly, are problematic. For example, on different documents, I have seen 3 different years of birth given for my Grandfather Jozef Gostyński: 1877, 1878, 1879. Interestingly I found a hand written document in Polish among my late parents things. This is the only place I've seen day, month, and year given. Jozef is listed as 19 March 1879. Małgorzata Muszyńska, my grandmother shows birth years of 1881, 1884, and 1885. 1984 was on her death certificate. The handwritten family document seems to list it as 10 June 1881. Birth years that I've seen for the brothers: Jan, 1867; Stanisław 1870; Wladisław 1875. I would think that Jan being the apparent oldest would give us a benchmark to search backwards for a marriage date for Tomas and Ludwika. There's one more possible younger brother and 2 sisters. But I don't want to cloud the issue too much. Jozef and Małgorzata were married in Pennsylvania, USA. I do have dates for all the children (all born in the USA).
Finally I have no dates to go with my Great Grandfather Tomas. I do know that My Great Grandmother Ludwika immigrated in 1909 and was a widow at that point. Her immigration docs showed her birth year as 1849. Her death certificate shows 1842. now that's quite a spread. But the reporter on the death certificate was Stanisław. One final thing, Ludwika's death certificate shows her parents as Carl and Caroline Osiński. Those given names might have been anglicized.
I'm not sure I got all the diacritical marks correct on the Polish spellings. Feel free to correct and educate me. At 66 years old, it may be a bit late to start learning Polish, but I would like to visit if I can establish some family connections there.

We are lucky here at PO, because we have one wonderful knowledgable person, able to read handwritten Cyrillic and translate vital records to English - he is helping many people here. First thing to do is to have your family names in Polish. I can read and write printed Cyrillic (one upon a time I was able to communicate modestly in Russian) - I can transliterate your names into Cyrillic. We will definitely narrow the years of birth/marriage, and start with the easiest case in your family. After that it will go step by step. Crossing fingers!

Thanks again. I believe we are narrowing things down. Your comment about the vital records circa year 1900 being in Cyrillic presents an interesting problem. Are there Cyrillic capable researchers that one could pay to help with research? I do belong to the Polish Genealogical Society of California. I could also ask there. Plus, we also have the The Pope John Paul II Polish Center in Yorba Linda, California, which is a fairly long distance from where I live, but worth a try also. Looks like researching my Paternal lineage will turn out to be an order of magnitude more difficult than researching my Maternal lineage (Sicilian). With some guidebooks and occasional translator assistance, I've made good progress there. Oh well, what's life without a good challenge here and there??

I googled for Morzyslaw. As far as I see on http://www.mapquest.com/ using Latitude/Longitude, both places are within today Konin, Chorzeń is in the West, 2 km from Morzyslaw, today address is Poznanska Street.

I looked up in "Słownik geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego i innych krajów słowiańskich" from 1880, on line and indexed. Here is the page for Morzysław and Chorzeń http://dir.icm.edu.pl/pl/Slownik_geograficzny/Tom_VI/690 - Morzyslaw is 5 wiorst (approx kilometer) North-East from Konin. The description of that old Morzyslaw suggests a quite large and rich parish, with several villages, including Chorzeń.

When googling "Morzyslaw Konin Chorzen" I found that recent note about Konin expanding to nearby villages. The last sentence about Chorzen says the village had one hundred years old fire department.

While doing Google searches on Morzyslaw, I found another community a little more to the west called Chorzen' located at Latitude: 52.233334 Longitude: 18.233334. I wonder if this was the site of an earlier village that my late cousin was trying to refer to.
Can you use your expertise to ferret out some info on Chorzen'? Parishes, historical info?

Very good information. Thank you very much! Yes, I had already concluded that
they moved around within a relatively small area. Your explanation of Skonina really
makes sense. On first blush, it seemed to me to be out of bounds from the others, but
now it fits right in. And errors in the immigration records from Ellis Island sometimes seem
more the rule than the exception. I really suspect that the people asking the questions and
taking down the answers were not all that educated themselves.
A first cousin once removed, who I only learned of a couple of years ago, actually travelled to
Poland and met with some relatives. Unfortunately I only managed to exchange one letter with her
before she passed away in her '90's. I did get good info on family lines that immigrated and
confirmed a lot of my research. I never managed to get a clear answer on the ancestral village from her
before she passed. Her letter said "Chozen'". Another variation that I couldn't confirm on any map or Gazetteer.
In her letter she said that "Chozen'" was nearer to Poznan than to Konin, but that the family had been in both places.
Since her passing, I have been corresponding with her Daughter who travelled to Poland with her, but have gotten
no answers to my questions. I'm uncertain what the reluctance is. I just wrote her again the other day.
If I have some success, I'll post it here.

I found a list of villages and their parishes, Protestant and Roman-Catholic, by Friends of Kalisz Archives, here:

In the second Excel (Roman-Catholic) there are two lines of interest, 475 and 1620.

I cannot find Chorzyn on today maps, but Morzysław-Kolonia does exist (Kolonia means usualy an extension of a village), Krzymów in on today maps, Konin is a well known city. All that 3 places are close, Morzyslaw to Konin is 5 km, Konin to Krzymow 17 km distance.

My hypothesis would be that all names besides Kalisz in "last residences" on your list is the same name, transcript from what people were saying.
It could be also that "Skonina" is "z Konina" - where do you come from? z Konina - from Konin.

They all, at least initially settled in the Pringle borough of Luzerne County, PA. The oldest Jan Gostynski arrived 31 Mar 1893 on the Strassburg from Bremen. Next Stanislaw, who arrived 31 Oct 1895 on the Lahn from Bremen. Next my grandfather Jozef arrived on 1 May 1901 on the Grosser Kurfurst from Bremen. Ellis Island info has not been very helpful. Here are the "last residences" listed: Kalisch; Hiorin; Chorzyn, Chozyn, Goszin, Gozin. A great aunt, Adamina arrived on 17 Mar 1905 on the Noordam out of Rotterdam. Her last residence was listed as Skonina. Nothing definitive to hang my hat on. I'm guessing that the personnel taking the info on entry at Ellis Island were not all that more literate than my ancestors, so the Polish town names may have been problematic for them.

Do you have any arrival information about the ancestors you've described? If you don't already have the ship arrival information, we might be able to find some clues that will lead us to one. Do you know when your Gostynski arrived and where they first settled?

Is this your first query of this kind - or have you posted a similar request on other family history sites? Sharing what you've already learned from others can help members here avoid giving you information and advice that you already know.

I hope all of this leads to you finding cousins in Poland. I was one of the lucky one's who found living relatives there, but it took a lot of patience and help from others. It was worth the wait!

My Polish ancestors immigrated to the U.S.A (Pennsylvania) in the late 1800's and early 1900's. My paternal grandfather Jozef Gostynski and several brothers and a sister plus their mother who was a widow all immigrated. Their parents were Tomas and Ludoka/Ludwiga (Osinski) Gostynski. I'm unsure of the ancestral village. Several places mentioned in family legend were Poznan, Konin, Chorzen, Krzymow.
My Paternal grandmother Malgorzata Muszynska immigrated from Pawlowice.
Any help, ideas, hints, would be greatly appreciated.
