Unfortunately, the missing years for marriage records in Kwidzyn are precisely 1887 and 1888.
However, if they were born there you may try to request their birth certificates:

Though Kwidzyn is in pomorskie province, the Pomorskie Towarzystwo Genealogiczne (http://www.ptg.gda.pl/) has no records transcribed for this place.

Yes, there is a spot on a Social Security application for the mother's maiden name. I think my grandfather's employer must have filled his out because his mother's maiden name was spelled Bortsky, and later I found out it was Boczkaj.

An alternative for you might be the baptismal records of the children. Usually the mother's maiden name was written there. A birth record would be a possibility in some places (some places kept records earlier than others). A death record might have the maiden name, but there can be mistakes in death records. It's considered a secondary source since the person in question isn't filling out record. I think any of those records would be cheaper than the Social Security application.
