Article from International Herald Tribune, on-line version http://www.iht.com/.

Slave labor documents in Nazi archive digitized
The Associated Press Published: August 25, 2008

BERLIN: A major archive of World War II-era documents in Germany says it has completed digitizing some 6.7 million documents on the Nazis' slave labor program.

The International Tracing Service in Bad Arolsen says digitization will help preserve the documents. Copies of the data were transferred Monday to Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Memorial, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Institute of National Remembrance in Poland.

Head archivist Udo Jost says the documents attest to the "monstrous dimension" of the slave labor program. They include employment records, patient files, insurance documents and registry cards.

Experts estimate that 12 million people were forced to work for the Nazis or industries that supported Hitler's Third Reich.
-- End of article

Now we are waiting for decision from The Institute of National Remembrance in what form they are going to make these records available.

I have received from Kengal link to the article in which there is a mention about the Institute in Warsaw http://www.topix.net/content/ap/2008/01/museum-provides-detail-from-nazi-archive . It seems that we have to wait before we can start sending requests to Warsaw.

The main website of The Institution of National Remembrance (IPN) in English you will find here http://www.ipn.gov.pl/portal/en/.

One of the main goals of the Institute is to investigate Communist and Nazi crimes. Main emphasis is put on Communist crimes (much more materials are collected from years 1944-1989) but there are also research programs related to WWII crimes, click here: http://www.ipn.gov.pl/portal/en/43/SupraRegional_Programmes.html

For the last years, and especially last months we have had in Poland lots of political rumble regarding IPN and so called "vetting". It has evoked many disputes and conflicts here. There were even comments about the situation in foreign TVs (SBS Australia http://tinyurl.com/2o75a3). I had chance to visit IPN personally last year and I learned the hard way that they have very strict rules for releasing any information.

If you are going to get any information from IPN you have to submit form application which is unfortunately in Polish only, click here: http://www.ipn.gov.pl/portal/pl/10/Wnioski.html . What is important you have to prove your blood relation to person you are looking for, and provide application with notarized signature.

As for other holocaust records what I only know is what I read on International Tracing Services website: http://tinyurl.com/2qm4m7 (thank you Kengal for sending me the info).

Maybe some of you have already applied for research in the Bad Arolsen Archives and could share your own experience in researching this huge database (17.5 million names)?

Our Polish GIG would like to know if you can find the address for the Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw, Poland. We understand many Holocaust Records have recently been released and are stores in three archives: Warsaw, Washington,DC and Israel. We'd appreciate an address from you.
Thanks, Marg and GIG
