I really appreciate the help with the translation. I just feel guilty asking you to do that. I was hoping that I could communicate using the google translator but that's not working out too well. I wish I could speak Polish. Have a nice day!

What Elzbieta says about Google translate is true. A human is able to translate better than a machine because translating is actually an art and machines don't have that ability.

Based on the previous email I translated, where the author of the email said that the grandmother was born in Pennsylvania, west Moreland probably refers to Westmoreland (County) in Pennsylvania.
Do not blame Google, personal text might be impossible to translate. It is like instant messaging, a kind of chat, no punctuation, sometimes an old variant of a word.
Hi Stanle, greetings

rozmawialem z wujkiem z Pollski
I spoke to Uncle in Poland

najmlodszy syn mojej babci
the youngest son of my Grandma

NOTE: I guess that it refers to the Uncle, so it writes: I spoke to Uncle in Poland, the youngest son of my Grandma

to babcia za panny pisala sie Komperda Maria
Grandma's maiden name is Maria Komperda
(but litteraly it is written: when Grandma was a Miss she has been writing her name Komperda Maria)

jej rodzice rodzice Jan Rozalia Komperda
Her parents (were) Jan and Rozalia Komperda
(I guess one "rodzice" too much, and not parents of parents)

Imieszkali west Moreland // I mieszkali west Maryland
and they lived in the West Maryland

I jak ja tu przyjechalim to kuzyny babci chcieli sie z name zkontaktowac
When I arrived here then Grandma's cousins wanted to contact us

it was year 1995

ale pewnie poumierali
Probably they passed away (since then)

poputaj w kosciolak tam bedzie duzo // popytaj w kosciolach, tam bedzie duzo
Ask in churches, there should be a lot (of documents)

bo babci mentryke chsztu wlasnietak odnaleziono // bo babci metryke chrztu wlasnie odnaleziono
Because Grandma's baptism records just has been found

a jak nie to to bede pytal bo tu jest duzo kietow
But if not, I will continue to ask, because here there is a number of Kieta
Here is a translation of the email---not 100% literal but taking the Polish idioms and translating them into idiomatic English.

"I greet you, Stasiu (Stan). It is possible that we are related based on the fact that I remember that my grandmother was born in Pennsylvania. Her name was Mary (Maria) and she came to Poland as an infant. It seems that her parents died and the children (her siblings) decided to go with her to Poland. Her husband, my grandfather, was named Stanislaw Chlebek and they had 13 children and I am their grandson. From what I remember when I was small, someone, one of her cousins, sent packages to Poland from Pennsylvania. And when I traveled to the USA one of her cousins wanted to contact our family, but that did not happen. Probably they died and that is how that happened. My mother's sisters (and) brother are in Chicago and I will ask them for more information and will let you know (what I learn). Greetings and I wish you much health."

Hope this translation helps.

Dave

Thank you Dave for the translation. It was much better than what I got on Translate.google.com.

                                      Stan,
Here is a translation of the email---not 100% literal but taking the Polish idioms and translating them into idiomatic English.

I took Gilberto's advice and I registered on the NK.PL website. I found several dozen people with my surname and I took a chance and sent them all an email introducing myself and explaining that I was searching for information on relatives. I've received several replies to my email. All them in Polish. With a little help from translate.google.com I've been able to read most of the email messages. I received one today that the google translator is having a lot of trouble interpreting. I think this person is saying that we may be related but I'm not sure. Can someone please translate the message below? Is there something odd about the writing to explain why google could not translate it? Thanks in advance!
Many show landscapes, architecture and dress. Definitel worth a look for anyone on this website.

Wow. Thanks Shellie. I wish there was a better way to piece together how these people are all related to each other and to me. Where was the internet 200 years ago?

Franciszek has light blonde hair and many of the men in my family, including myself, are light blonde. The women tend to have darker brown or reddish colored hair. I wonder, is this is a feature of the polish people, in general, or if it is more of a family trait? Most of the Poles that I know in the US tend towards darker hair.

Interesting find. This photo is part of a gallery of vintage photos on a website for the village Rogoznik. This village is just a stone's throw north of Stare Bystre. Here are some photos:

Stanisław Kieta ur. (born) 1885 zm. (died) .1969

Franciszek Kieta, died at Auschwitz 1943.

You can view the gallery - with lots of cool Goral photos here:

Many people who are new to Polish genealogy are surprised to find that it wasn't just Jewish people who were sent to concentration camps. Thousands and thousands of Poles were murdered or perished in these camps as well

                                      Hi Shellie
Thank you for the advice! I'll definitely try it.

Unfortunately, Francizek died in 1915 from tuberculosis without being married. Many of my aunts and uncles have already passed and those that are still alive have given me some information but they don't know much about the family in Poland. I think that I've actually learned more in my research than they know.

My grandmother had some old framed family photos and other records that I remember seeing when I was a boy but everything she had was washed away in the 1977 Johnstown flood. Her house was completely demolished.

I think that Grampa had an older sister named Maria who stayed in Poland when the rest of the family came here but my aunts can't agree on whether that's true or not. That's one of the reasons that I'm trying to reconnect with my "lost" relatives in Poland. I was hoping that perhaps Maria had a family and they might have some information.

I know that my grandfather had relatives with the same surname in New York and my grandmother had relatives in Connecticut but my family lost touch with them many years ago. I wouldn't know how to contact them.

I did make contact with one Kieta in Poland from the emails that I sent on the NaszaKlasa website. His wife speaks english so communicating got a lot easier. He has one remaining uncle who lived near Stare Bystre and he agreed to ask his uncle if he knows anything about my family. I've got my fingers crossed but my grandparents came here over 100 years ago so I'm not expecting much at this point.

I'd like to thank everyone on this site for all of the help you've provided. I'm amazed that there is this much interest in our heritage. To be honest, I wasn't expecting any responses and I've been getting help every day. THANKS!!

                                      Hi Stan,
Was your family close to the family of your grandfather's brother Francizek Kieta who you said was born in 1892 and came to the US in 1906? I ask because if you do not know his family, it would be worth tracking them down to see what the oldest surviving family members can share with you. When I did this, I found relatives that had names, addresses, letters and photos from Poland that helped further my research.

Also, sometimes I will do a search on Ancestry.com with only a keyword - no names. If you have not ever done this, it is very interesting. Be sure to type in "Stare Bystre" with quotes so the search engine looks for that exact name.

                                      Thanks Cheri,
I've learned not to take anything for granted when doing this research.

I spent a lot of time looking for the ship manifest for my grandfather's brother Francizek. Several times I found a record for a Francizek Kieta listed as a female and I passed over looking at the record. When I did look at it I found that whoever translated the manifest misread it. The manifest listed Francizek as a single male (SM) but it was interpreted as (FM). It was the manifest for my great uncle.

I also spent much time looking for the manifest for my grandmother. One of my aunts told me that she came here with an aunt named Mrs. Orkisz and another said she came with a Mrs. King. I knew my grandmother came through New York because she would tell a story about the entire ship cheering when they saw the Statue of Liberty. I managed to find the ship manifest for Mrs. Orkisz but there was no mention about a little girl.

One day I found an obituary for Mrs King. It said that before marrying Mr. King, she was married to an Orkisz. It also said that her maiden name was Dydula. I found the ship manifest for Miss Dydula and the next line on the manifest listed a Bronoslawa Dydula who was the right age and from the same town as my grandmother Bronoslawa Szczurek. They were even travelling to the correct town. I think that Miss Dydula used a fake surname for my grandmother in order to get her to the US more easily. It turned out that both of my aunts were correct. Gramma did come with Mrs Orkisz and with Mrs King.

Here's an update on NaszaKlasa: I found 18 Kieta's on the NaszaKlasa website. I wrote an email of introduction and used translate.google.com to convert it to Polish. I then sent the email to the 18 people I found on NaszaKlasa. I hoped that some of them might respond back but, so far, I haven't had any responses. Oh well, I thought it was worth a shot.

I think you may be right about Jan Stopko. Gallitzin isn't too far from Portage and Portage is only about 30 miles north of where Jan and Anna finally moved to. I had assumed that Jan moved directly to Bens Creek or Hooversville when he arrived.

Wow, everyone on this site is so helpful. I really appreciate the help. Last evening I spent some time on the NaszaKlasa website looking for Kieta's and I found a photo of a little boy with the same surname who looks almost identical to my grandson. I showed my wife the picture and her first reaction was to ask whether my daughter had sent me a new photo of her son.

Stan,
That is very cool about the photo you saw on the NaszaKlasa website.

Yesterday I was originally going to comment that IF your Jan Stopko had gone to NJ first, I wouldn't have ruled him out. I found that my assumptions about my grandparents had really slowed me down in the beginning. I thought they had both gone to Chicago first, before finally settling in Hammond, IN (25 miles away). My oldest 3 aunts were born in Chicago, so I searched there for a marriage record. It turned out that they had married in Hammond, IN. My grandmother had gone to an Uncle in Chicago when she first arrived. My grandfather to his sister in Hammond. The information on their application for a marriage license had that she was working in a hospital in Hammond at the time. They moved a number of times, and my guess is that it was always for work.

I have seen other people from Poland going to Chicago first, and then ending up in Pennsylvania, and other places. People don't always do what we expected, and it's helpful and interesting to get us much documentation as you can. If any of your immigrant ancestors became citizens, you might want to look for naturalization papers for them.
Best of luck,
Hi,

Type Stare Bystre in the field Miejscowosc. Be sure of the correct polish spelling of the place. If it has diacriticals, they must be typed, either.
Have you looked at the Jan Stopka, age 25, who arrived in 1899 (who Polish Librarian found)? He was from Stare Bystre, Galicia, and was going to an acquaintance in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania. I think I saw this same Jan/John in the 1900 census. He was a border living in Portage Twp., Cambria County, PA.
