Eagle has no crown. So more likely post 1945. However some eagles without crowns were used interwar.

kandrolj...I tried doing some Google searches and wasn't able to find anything specific. However, there are a few possibilities that might help...

-The photo has been colored. That might mean it is more recent, say later than 1920 or so...maybe as late as 1940.

-Nearly all the Polish army uniforms I found include square caps, not round ones like in the photo. However there were a couple of exceptions I found. http://polishgreatness.blogspot.com/2012/04/world-war-2-military-uniforms-polish.html Scroll down on that page to the Polish Cavalry Officer (1939), where there is one round hat. But the part above the bill is gold and not blue like in your photo, so it might not be the same.

-Another possibility is that it is a police uniform...maybe even Granatowa policja, the Polish police in the German occupied Poland in WWII. I suspect there were quite a variety of police and self defense uniforms during that era, that are not well documented.

Good luck!
Hello Zenon
There was nothing on the back of the photo. Antoni was born in Poland, so why would he be in a Prussian uniform????
I would over in Poland May 2013 and stayed at what was his farm. His 92 year old lives there now. The farm is in the southwest part of Poland.
That is why I can't figure out why your friend said it looks like a Prussian uniform. I don't know much about Poland, I only took a friend over to see her aunt at the farm. Antoni was born in 1882, so would he not be a little too old to be in the army of any sort. I also can't figure out why he has no collar on his jacket. Wasn't Prussia part of Germany at one time???
Hi, looking at the site saxoniamilitaria.com, apparently the buttons denoted whether a man was an office or NCO. Looks like the top button was usually red or partly red. The colors of the cap itself probably did show the regiment. It would be great if there was a way to transform black and white photos to the original colors.

Can the photo be posted with the possibly Russian uniform? I'd like to see it.
I thought they looked like large buttons! I had a look at a close up of one on another site and they are actually metal studs with a coloured insert. There are quite a few different colours, probably to denote various regiments??
Does anyone else think that those round things on hats are snaps?
It looks like they snap together to scruch the hat down in front.

Good Luck and let us all know what you find out about the uniforms! Shellie

Shellie, that is a great site and I shall be using it soon as I have an old photo of my grandfather taken standing next to a soldier in what I think is a Russian uniform.

I subscribe to a free site called the Austro Hungarian Land Forces Discussion Forum and at this site many people post photos of soldiers and ask for advice. I have posted a few photos there myself. Here are a few inquiries - the first 2 are mine and the rest were randomly selected as examples for you:
Teresa, thanks for checking! My roommate did a search on Prussian military uniforms and found this last night. It is a 1910 Vereinfachte Feldrock uniform. You were right about the time period. This at least tells me the people are likely from my grandmother's side of the family as her passenger listing said she was German, while my grandfather was listed as Russian.

That's interesting! Shame you can't turn the fellow's head slightly and we can see the full badge

Feliciaj, I have had a good search today on military sites and can find very little. One site indicated that the centre cap badge may mean this man is a policeman rather than in the army. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Teresa, thanks for the info. Didn't know which hat badge you wanted to see, but when I enlarged the cropped area I noticed something on the side of the one hat. See what you think.

                                      Hi Feliciaj

Skirts of ankle length first came into fashion in 1908 and were popular at this length until WW1. The little boy's sailor suit was at the height of popularity around 1909 but had been around since 1900. Is it possible for you to enlarge the area of the hat badge so it is clearer?

Hi, I have two old photos and am trying to identify the uniform the man is wearing to help determine the approximate date/place of origin. Can anyone help?
