Gilberto and Shellie,
Gilberto, I know you don't have access to Ancestry.com but if you'd like, I can give you access to my tree, that way you can check on my progress. I would need your email address.
Shellie, I believe you can access it if you'd like. The tree is Milewski/Everett.
I have been making progress.
I'm still trying to track down which of my cousins inherited the bulk of my grandparents photos and other memorabilia. I think it would be very useful.

Shellie, I hadn't paid attention to Stanley and Mary's marriage license. The parents names are listed. My dad, who was named Leo, was always called Leopold. I'm very excited by this! The license shown by the LDS documents is more limited. Can I get a copy of the original? The priest couldn't find a record at the church, maybe he needs more time. I have not idea what kind of shape the church records are in.

So sorry. I lost my wi-fi all day yesterday. What a nuisance!
Yes, I've seen this entry. I have it saved in my Ancestry.com shoebox. Frankly, I have saved all Milewski and "close enough" references I have found. I just don't know how they are related. The Providence Polish community was relatively small and confined geographically to an area known as Olneyville. Today of course it is dispersed, bot the church, St Adalberts is still there. I only wish I could go there by myself to research. The priest is very nice but I'm afraid he is overworked. I will try to get my sister to go, but she hates the "big city!" Ha! She should try LA!
Gilberto has made some suggestions about my grandmothers family.
I will work on them right now.

Do you know if your grandmother Mary Brykowicz Milewski had brothers and sisters? If yes, do you know their names?

Interesting find in the 1930 census, Providence, RI. Paulina and Simon are living with Frank Milewicz.

If Mary Brykowicz (18 at arrival) was daughter of Antoni Brykowicz (42 at arrival), who was her mother ? Why didn't she come along? Was Antoni a widow by then?

Looks like Mary Brykowicz was named after her mother. The marriage information is available on FamilySearch, but not an image of the original.

Mary - have you tried to obtain a copy of the marriage license from the state of Rhode Island? Was the priest at her church able to locate the church record for this marriage?
Answers and more findings:

Antoni Zawadzki - this would be the brother of John Zawadzki whose death certificate I posted above?
- Yes, parents are the same.
Antoni's mother Franciszka Brykowicz is the sister of Antoni Brykowicz who came to the US in 1907 with his daughter as we discussed above...?
- Possibly, though they lived in different villages (Zarunbice and Kociubince)
Are the online images available for earlier years?
- I have found only these two in Geneteka > Ukraine > Grzymalów

Today's findings:

Paulina (spelled as Brykowioz in www.stevemorse.org) arrived on June 6, 1900, sailing from Bremen on Konig Louise. She was 23, therefore born about 1877. Paulina was travelling along Franciszka Zawacka, 36, and her children Franciszka 11 and Jan 15. Going to meet husband and father and brother-in-law. Their last residence was Buczyki, located near Zarubince (Grzymalów parish).

Szymon (spelled as Zawacki in www.stevemorse.org) had arrived before, on November 6, 1899, sailing from Bremen on ship Barbarossa. He was 44, therefore born about 1855, which matches the age in the baptismal record I found yesterday (and so does Franciszka's).

It seems the family moved from Zarunbice and Buczyki (1899-1900) to Kociunbice (1907), 20 miles South. There are Greek-catholic records covering the birth year for Mary Brykowicz (1899), but there are not Roman-Catholic, in Kociunbince. However, these years are available in LDS films for Zarunbice.

I think Joanna (b. about 1845), Franciszka (b. about 1854), Antony (b.about 1865) and Paulina (b.1877) were siblings (at least Joanna and Franciszka were, for sure).

If Mary Brykowicz (18 at arrival) was daughter of Antoni Brykowicz (42 at arrival), who was her mother ? Why didn't she come along? Was Antoni a widow by then?

In your opinion can I assume that my great grandfather was denied admission at Ellis Island? He was young, considering, only 42.

Now, you say Kocinbince is in the East of Poland. In at least one census Mary is called Austrian, so I had assumed it was in Galicia. How should I pursue this so that I can learn more about her.

My last question is about Stanley. There are two, and I was assuming they were cousins. The other Stanley married Catherine and he was godfather to at least one of Stanley and Mary's children. But I can only find his transport papers. Could he have not gone to Ellis Island? If he came through another port, like Boston, where would his paperwork be?
Again, thank you for your help.

Mary,
I have a feeling that Antoni was not turned away at Ellis Island. We should continue to look for him in Rhode Island. I wonder if this is him in the 1913 Providence city directory (see screen shot below)

Galicia was very large and included a large portion of today's Ukraine. Thanks to Gilberto, we have a possible village name/area and It looks like Gilberto has found another important clue to your ancestral village by finding the birth of Antoni Zawadzki, son of Syzmon Zawadzki and Franciszka Brykowicz. I appears that Franciszka Brykowicz is the sister of your great-grandfather Antoni Brykowicz, so a little more exploration may identify your Brykowicz ancestors.

About Stanley, Yes he might have arrived in another port. I found my Ukrainian great-grandfather's arrival in Philadelphia. Do you want to focus on both grandparents at once? It might be easier to begin a new thread just to discuss Stanley and rename this thread something like "Brykowicz"

Szymon Zawadzki does appear to be the brother-in-law of your great-grandfather Antoni. Szymon was married to Francis Boykowicz, according to the death certificate of Szymon's son John Zawadzki.

Also, in the 1910 Census, Pauline Brykowicz was living with Szymon and Francis Zawadzki in Providence. Pauline was still living with them in 1920 at 19 Florence St in Providence - you can find her indexed in the 1920 US census as Pauline Berkowrick.

                                      Mary,
I have seen at the end of some groups of ship manifests, a section for detained aliens. I actually found several of my female ancestors there because they came to America unaccompanied and the US officials wanted to make sure that unaccompanied women were not left in America without a job or the support of their family.

I was wondering where you saw the word Kocinbince. This was the name of your grandmother's village in Poland, as written in her 1907 ship manifest? She arrived 27 APR 1907 in New York on the SS Patricia, correct? They were headed to Rhode Island to Antoni's brother in law (Szymon Zawadski or Zawadzki). Simeon Zawdski is shown in the 1913 city directory at 19 Florence St in Providence.

I am unable to decipher the name of their birthplace and last residence (they appear to be the same village). The manifest says they are Ruthenian, so we can guess that we'll be looking toward the Eastern side of Poland for your grandmother's birthplace.

My Ruthenian ancestors were Ukrainian and the original spelling of their surname ended in wicz.

I also included a screen shot of their village as shown on the manifest when they were in Hamburg 14 APR 1907.

Does this information help you?

Mary wrote:
The postings were from 2014. I remember one asking where Kociumbince was. This was her place of origin in the Hamburg listing from 1907. I can't remember the other question. But I did want to pursue what I came up with.

Also, I'm curious if the people who were denied admission and sent back are recorded anywhere. There doesn't seem to be any mention of my great grandfather after they arrived.

I have corresponded with the parish priest from Providence and he is not mentioned at all.

I found the listing for Antoni. I found other citations as well. I'm waiting to hear back from the Polish church in Providence. Something there might answer some questions. The church was est. in 1905. But the priest I emailed thought they had all their records still. I wish I could go and look myself!

Here is where I saw the Antone Brekovitz family in 1910:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MP6R-QMS
To see the original document, you could click Explore viewing options, and since you said you had a subscription to Ancestry, you could click on that to see the census form. Even though he's indexed as Antone, I think it looks like Antoni. One thing that matches with this Antoni is that the census form has 1907 as the year he immigrated.
