Hi kandrolj,
I was wondering if you could please tell me if you have run across any Babicz or possibly Babiś in the Sw. Rozalia church records? My mom matches dna with a descendant of Jacob Babicz, who may have been born in Bukowina-Podszkle about 1883-1885, but may have also just lived there before he immigrated to Chicago.

In the census it says he immigrated in 1904 and 1905. He married in Chicago on 23 Jan 1905, so I believe he immigrated in 1904. I think it is him arriving in NY on 6 Oct 1904 under the name Jacob Babiś. There was him and 5 Czarniks from "Lukowice", but the Hamburg departure manifest clearly says he was from Bukowina (of course not necessarily born there). Others that you kindly told me about, Kolodziej and Szymusiak (distant cousins' families) had ties to Zaluczne also, and ended up in Bukowina-Podszkle.

Jacob was going to his uncle Frank Lenart in Chicago on 822 W 18th St. In 1910 he and his family were living in the same building as a John Lenart and his family. My grandmother's parents were Klemens Lenart and Magdalena Babicz from Zaluczne, so although they weren't on the list of surnames you gave from parish records, I am very curious if there were any Babicz or Lenarts in the records.

Thanks so much for your time,
kandrolj- thank you very much! I learned a little more since my post in July, Ignatius Notta & Veronica Zonzely in the list above are my 3rd great grandparents.

The list is interesting, I see 3 separate instances of a Notta marrying a Zonzely.

If it's not too difficult to search in your Sw. Rozalia church records, could you please tell me if there were any children born to Wojciech (Adalbertus) and Anna Szymusiak in the late 1870s - 1885? Their daughter Bronislawa was born in Zaluczne in 1875, but then she was married in Bukowina-Podszkle, and siblings gave that village as their birth place on ship manifests. I'm also wondering about a Jan Kanty Kolodziej born in 1885 who had written on his WWII draft registration that he was born in Bukowina, but he may have also been born in Zaluczne.
Thank you!
Question is there an easy way to load the pictures? Won't let me attach the Excel spreadsheet ...so here it is below
Cheri I am busy planning a visit to Podszkle. I need to update my Legacy program, make copies of my documents, etc. So please be patient. The surname Kolodziej looks familiar & I believe I have seen reference to the village of Zaluczne in Sw. Rozalia records. I will look as I do my research and in depth look when things are not so busy.

                                      Hi kandrolj,
If it's not too difficult to search in your Sw.
Thank you!
From Podszkle you can view 14 mountain ranges. One range is Babia Góra, literally Old Wives’ or Witches’ Mountain is a massif situation on the border between Poland and Slovakia in the Western Beskidy Mountains. Babia Góra was first mentioned in the 15th century chronicle of Jan Dlugosz. It was first plotted on a map in 1558. Until the end of the 17th century most of the available information on the mountain came from folklore. According to folk tales, the mountain was the location of the witches’ Sabbath. Podszkle-one of the oldest Polish villages of Orava County, noted from 1580, beautifully located amongst small mountains, deep woods, and local rivers. The church on-site erected in the XVIII century... The name of the place Podszkle directly means in Polish off-the-glass [under glass] and the local story is that centuries ago the glazier, quickly going thru the village [no name?] suddenly stumbled, lost his glass and said: “Cholerka, to po szkle” – “Oh my, I lost all my glass”. It is on the border of Galacia, known as Podhale Nowy Targ
The river, Czarna Orawa, flows through the local territory. It flows inward at Lubrzyca and Lipnica, and on the right bank is Jablonka, Piekielnik with the stream Borowy also on the right, and on the left bank is the stream Chiani. The stream Chianik starts at the southwest border of Jablonka.
Between the stream Borowy and the border of Piekielnik stretches the Piekieknik Bog. To the southeast are forests known as the Bor. Similiar bogs stretch on to the south along the stream Chizni, and then west at the mouth of the Lipnica to Czarna Orawa. This last bog is called Ostrembowka."

History of Bukowina
Podszkle and the neighboring Bukovina are among the oldest villages in the Polish Orava. Names Posklya and Bukowynka first appear in the tax records from Orava Castle and dates back to 1566 and 1567. They were founded by Jerzenego Thurzona and were not paying taxes. The first mayor of Bukovina was Valentine Bukowinski (Rokicki). The development of this settlement has been slow. In 1598, it had only 7 farms. Additional troubles were caused to the settlement in the early seventeenth century because of revolutionary situation caused by anti-Hapsburg uprise of Stefan Bocskay. For these reasons, George Thurzo admitted in the year 1613 both village settlers special relief. A few years later, in 1619 because his widow Elizabeth Thurzonie Czobora and his son Emeryk asked governor Walenty to create common administration for the two villages. The family names of the peasants from Bukovina and Podszkla listed in the registry from 1624 such as: Biernatko (biernat, variant of given name Bernard), Chlebek (Bread), Czyszczon (Cleaned), Polak (Poles), Polański (polana, glade, clearing in forest), Marszałck (Marshall), tell us explicitly about their origins.

The family of Bukovina village administrators took the side of the Habsburg court against the Protestant rebellion in the Orava region in 1672. But, a year later, the Emperor Leopold I praised John Bukowinski (son of) Valentine and his kinsman John Wilczek released of all obligations of the Orava Castle and gave him ownership of the assets previously possessed. The February 17, 1764 family status was upgraded to courtier. [Nobility in church records]

Bukovina and Podszkle are both in terms of area occupied and administration are separate villages. Bukovina is now a cluster of Vill. Raby. Podszkle is back to Vill, Czarnego Dunajca.

Bukovina inhabitants are Roman Catholics since the uprising. They belong to the pastoral care of the catholic parish in Orawce founded around 1650. It was only in the late eighteenth century, when Joanna Wilczkowa funded construction of chapel in Podszklu which was turned into the church when parish was founded (in 1803).

Bukovina is located on a picturesque hill, through the center of the village flows the beautiful stream Czarna Woda (Black Water). From the Zeleznice ridge you can take a view at Vill. Beskid and enjoy beautiful panorama of the Tatras. At the Zeleznice pass and Bukowinski Werch (Peak) there are two crosses. Bukowina lies among picturesque spruce forests, mid-forest meadows reaching to the top of Zeleznice. Standing on the hills our eyes will stop on the Orava hills, wet fields, and will slide closer to the pane on the horizon to stop on "Slovak sea", a huge lake stacked on the Black and White Orava.

Bukowina in the postwar years was a poor village. Lack of access road, "window on the world" sometimes smoky wooden huts, lit by oil lamps. Lack of shop forced residents to trek after oil to distant village Odrowaz 4 km away. To meet the needs of local residents in 1958, Mr. Stanislaw Kadubek founded a shop in his home with basic food products. Goods were delivered by carriage from the warehouse in the Villl Czarnej Dunajec. Shop thrived for 14 years. Community lived happily working for the common good.

In 1969, the village was connected to the electricity mains after efforts of regional "Committee". Bukowina elected mayors: King Stanislaw, Wendelin Golak, Wladyslaw Gala, Anna Gal. They began to build a road to connect the village with Harkabuzem, Raba Wyzna and other towns. Cultural life started to develop; locals began to think about bringing water to the farms, looking for sources. Water collecting system Zogrodow was built which supplies entire Bukovina and Beskidowy with water, a phone line that connected the village to the "world" was built.

The main sponsors of the chapel building in Bukovina were:
Anna and Stanisław Kadlubek
Maria and Franciszek Golak
Maria and Marian Golak
Aniela and Stanisław Golak
Stefania and Franciszek Gal
Wincenty Łabuda

They do not spare on their savings and labor to build God's house in the land where they were born. Their donations to the construction also contributed the parishioners of Podszkla. As evidence of memory on the wall behind the chapel there are memorial plaques with the names of founders. The entire construction was ran by Stanislaw Król who solidly meets its obligations as a proof of special gratitude to the Almight God for the grace sustained. The work was done in rapid pace.

It's a festive day for the whole parish, Bukovina and Podszkle, August 1, 1999. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski accompanied by large group of priests sanctified Chapel. Pastor in Bukovina - Podszkle was then Fr. Jan Kolodziej. He received permission from the Cardinal to the first celebration of the Holy Mass in the sanctified Chapel. Emphatic words spoken during his homily even today sound with joy in our ears. Here they are: "Yes, in the wilderness, among the beautiful forests, fields and meadows, there was a great work done that is your achievement, so to speak, but did not forget your countrymen who opened their wallets to support this work." Today our hearts are burning with joy that our country men there in the beloved homeland may glorify God in everyday life in the church built together. Currently, the parish priest is a priest Wieslaw Topielarczyk. Still we remain "on guard" we care about the common good, where necessary, assist in repairs around the church, take care of the chapel interior. We are happy that we were able to bring this work to the end. Source: Translated Jan 2013 by Pavliuk Vitaliy, owner of On The Corner Bed and Breakfast, Kolomyya, Ukraine
