I played around with the name Wojciech on Ancestry and came up with Anna Gotkowska & Joseph Klonowski as parents living in Prussia... now I just have to prove it

Mike~ Jozef Klonowski's father was Wojciech Klonowski and his mother's name looks to be Maryanna Łakzewska. Maybe there's a letter between the k and the z, or maybe that's just the writer's cursive way of connecting the k to the z. If it's a letter I can't logically figure out what it could be – perhaps someone more familiar with Polish surnames and letter combinations can decipher it. The surname as I've typed it doesn't show up in Moikrewni.pl/mapa, but there are living people with that surname if you Google it. I've looked at some other records before and after this one but can't find another letter looking like the missing one to help decipher it.

Hello! I've just started researching my family and I stumbled across this forum.

If I'm correct Joseph Klonowski is my Great Grandfather. & Anastasia / Anastecka / "Nettie" Jarentowski is my Great Grandmother
I had traced them to Frank & Dora who where living with them in 1920 (per the census)

I'm having trouble making out Joseph's fathers & mothers names... would you be so kind as to take another look at the document?

I am trying to figure out who this Frank J. married to Doro is. Born in or around 1855 in Poland/Germany. I am also becoming resigned to the fact that there may be no records in Poland either destroyed and never existed. Is there a way to contact current Jarentowskis in Poland?

carolonpark~ GenGirl's list (from the PGSA index of marriages in Chicago Polish Catholic churches) of Jarentowski/a surnames included a marriage of Anastasia Jarentowska to Joseph Klonowski (you have the surnames reversed in your last message).

Attached is the image from the Holy Trinity Church 1900 marriage file on familysearch for Frank & Mary's marriage (p.153 = image 106) where I couldn't decipher Mary's mother's surname. I'll also try to attach the image of Anastasia's marriage record from St. Stanislaus Kostka (Noble St.) 1902-1903 marriage records (p. 292 = image 158) - file size is larger on this one, but it should work. Sorry - I see I spelled the surname wrong on the image labels.

These microfilms are not yet indexed on familysearch.org so you have to browse the images when you have the dates (as gengirl provided from the PGSA index.). Apologies if you know all this already, but it sounds to me like you may not have found how to browse images on familysearch.org.

I've just reread all the posts you've sent to me. First of all, there are two Franks in 1900, one my grandfather, and the other the son of his brother, Thomas. Catherine Stanisczewska may or may not be Maryanna's mother's name. I am attaching the only document I have. I know it may be almost impossible to read but oh well, I'll try anyway.

I never saw the marriage records of Joseph Jarentowski and Anastasia Klonowski or Teofil Jarentowski and Frances Kopicki. I don't think Thomas' children were those names. So along with Anastasia, that makes five siblings if this all adds up.

Part of my problem is that I am not sure of the area where the Jarentowskis originated. I did check the Poznan project and did not come up with any new information. If indeed the area is Krakow (the little one, not the big one) that might be a start. I am feeling bad about not finding any Polish records. Some of the information I have I know is correct; some speculation, but not to find ANYTHING has been frustrating. Thanks for your help

1900 marriage record for Frank Jarentowski and Maria Bielowski is the correct one, but carolonpark said she already had this info. The image at familysearch.org of the church marriage record confirms that no birth location is noted for Frank or Maria. I'm not sure I'd agree that Maria's mother's name was Staniscewska although I can't offer a better interpretation of the writing on this marriage record. I assume the spelling carolonpark has came from another record.

I'm guessing Frank's death cert. said he was from German Poland and nothing more specific (info probably provided by his wife).

If Anastasia Jarantowska were a relative, her Chicago church marriage record only says she is from Prussia and she's been in Chicago 15 years. Her parents are different than Franks - Franciszek Jarantowski and Dorota Tarcrewska or Tarczewska.

As I said before, for further work on finding the name of the village Frank was from, she could try following the trail his brother's records might provide. For Polish records (using the towns with the current high concentrations of Jarentowskis) I think she'll need to either find the microfilm at the FHL for the right village/parish or try searching further in the Poznan database. Without a definite location it's somewhat like looking for a needle in a haystack. ~PL

Have you tried searching at the Poznan project online?

Have you searched the catalog at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City by the geographic locale (town name)? If they have microfilmed records for the dates you are interested in, you can request they send the film to the family history center nearest you (usually at the LDS church) for a small fee for you to search for your ancestors.

Just remember not everything is on Ancestry...and not all the microfilmed records at the Family History Library have been indexed and put on familysearch.org.

Has there been any progress on researching the names Jarentowski, Makowski or Bielawski? When I "google" "Jarentowska" sometimes I come up with "Arent" names but I've gotten nowhere from this side of the pond. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello:

The marriage records for Franz and Mary just indicate Germany/Poland. The baptisms records add no further information.

Mary was born Maryanna Makowski on 15 August 1867 in Lyiec. Her parents are reported to be Catherine Staniscewska and Jan Makowski. This I know from a baptism affidavit most likely used when they immigrated.

Maryanna married Jan Bielawski in German Poland before they immigrated, I believe in 1892. Jan died in Chicago in 1893. Maryanna then married Frank in 1900.

Franz's parents were Matthew Jarentowski and Barbara Lewandowska. This I know from the marriage record.

So basically I am loking for Franczik Jarentowski family, Jan Makowski family, and Jan Bielwaski family (Maryanna's first husband).

But on Familysearch and Ancerstry I can't find any Polish records for any of the Jarentowskis. I am thinking there may have been a name change.

Your grandmother Mary's two communities of Łyniec and Wabcz are in the county of Chełmno (county seat is the town of Chełmno). Chojnice which had the second highest concentration of Jarentowski surnames on Moikrewni.pl, is 76 km (~50 mi.) northwest of Chełmno. Kalisz (where the majority of Jarentowski surnames were) is about 230 km (~150 mi.) south of Chełmno. From Kalisz, if you travel directly east you will arrive in the village of Krąków, not the major city of Kraków (note the "a" is different) which is much further south and was in Galicia during your timeframe. Whereas Kalisz, Krąków, Chełmno, Łyniec and Wabcz are all in the portion of Poland that was under German rule during your timeframe. Each of these towns probably had a German name while they were under German control, but even at familysearch.org any records from these areas should be indexed by the Polish town names.

I see at the Cook County Clerk of Circuit Court website they say: All naturalization records created in the Cook County Courts from 1871 to 1903 DO NOT contain the following data:
Date and town of birth
Ports of departure and arrival
Vessel of passage
Occupation
Information about wife and children

So naturalization records prior to 1904 won't help you. What about Franz's brother Thomas' children? All 6 were born in the U.S. If you know where they lived you could determine the church they attended and then browse the familysearch.org baptismal records for that church in the appropriate years. If you could find Thomas & Anastasia in the 1900 census, you'd have birth month and year for the children alive then (4 of the 6). What about Thomas' death certificate? Of course the information would be provided probably by his oldest son, since Anastasia died earlier in 1912.

Was Anastasia Jarentowska who married Paul Krusinski on July 25, 1887 in Cook County a sister of Frank & Thomas? ~PL

I know Franz was born in 1867 in Poland, but died in 1906 in Chicago. He was my grandmother's second husband, first being Jan Bielawski. (Billawski) They married in Poland. First son Jan, died as an infant, two daughters emigrated with them, and one was born after they arrived. Mary had four children with Franz, three who survived. Mary's maiden name was Makowski and she was born in Lyniec, Wabscz. As far as I know her parents were Jan and Catherine Stanisczewska. Thomas is indeed a brother. I haven't not been able to find naturalization records. I think the Frank listed in Castle Garden may be my grandfather. I just can't find any connection with Poland/Germany. I'm not sure who the second Frank is. Thomas has a son Frank, and a daughter Frances, so I know there are Franks in the next generation.

If the Frank married to Mary mentioned by PL is your grandfather and if he came from Kalisz, then a possible marriage record found on the Poznan Project site could be the marriage of Franciszek Jarentoski and Maryanna Janczak which took place in the parish of Koscielec Kalisz in 1887 (1887, entry 7). The Poznan Project is a great resource to locate marriage records from the German Partition.
