So I've found two families with the name Ptaszek. I'm curious if this could possibly be the proper spelling of my great grandmothers name? It's unfortunate that I have no living relatives that I can find who would know.

Naga418~ If the May 22, 1904 manifest for Elisabat Paszek (Line 11) age 18 is your great grandmother, it's interesting to note that the 4 people listed below her were also from Ruda. On Line 12 Maria Omat (indexed on Ellis with this spelling) was going to her cousin Maria Nowakowska in New York City. It's possible that your great grandfather is related to this Maria Nowakowska (female ….kowska, male ….kowski). Elisabat was going to her cousin Mary Zychno?? in Newark NJ. The other 3 people from Ruda were going to Hadley, Mass. ~PL

Your great-grandparents' church marriage record may give you the bride's and groom's places of birth/baptism, your great-grandfather's petition for naturalization could be a goldmine of information, if your great-grandpatents had siblings, try to find their immigration records that may give you their last residence and contact abroad as well as their destination and contact in the US, and so on.

Are these your great-grnadparents: Stanislaus 'Steven' Nowakowski, Belleville, Essex, New Jersey, wife Elizabeth?
I'll have a chance to dig deeper into these names over the weekend. Interesting is no male names have shown up nor can I seem to locate the names of parents. It is certainly a process.
Thanks again
Paszek from Ruda:
Sofia, arrival in 1901
Elizabeth, in 1904
Sofia (the same in 1905)
Maria and Agnes (Sofia's sisters) in 1907
Marta, in 1913 (she naturalized. Her mother was a Bonk (Bąk?)
Katerina, in 1921. This one mentioned Loujut. I believe it is actually Łancut (there are some Ruda around it - circled in pink - but I think it is the one indicated with a red arrow, map below).

I am just getting started and really know very little about finding where my people are from. My great grandmother Elizabeth M Paszek arrived in New York in 1904. On the first couple US census documents I have found she claimed to be from Ruda Galicia. Later that was changed to Krakow. Given Ruda seems to be a popular name is there a way to narrow this down?

Having briefly skimmed the document posted here without coming across the name Paszek I am curious if the Austrians would have spelled names differently.

Elizabeth married my great grandfather who I share a name with and his last name was Nowakowski. I don't seem to find that name either and it is very common name.

Great information for sure. I just need more time to learn to use it.

Thanks for sharing
