It's very hard to find some information about surnames.
There is also record for Czesław Samankiewicz on familysearch https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F68N-B6T or https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F6DW-B6F The only Samankiewicz i found is in Kuryer Litewski 1830 here about awarded school boy Michał Samankiewicz from school in Świsłocz (today Belarus).

Żarnowski surname may be from nobles from Wołyń area. There were also some Żarnowski in Bujwidze and around villages, it is located to the east from Wilno, at the very border of today Lithuania.

Quite small info for me to find accurate results.

Edit: There are some people going to USA from Kowno area, village is Osanka/Orzanki?? i cannot read exactly, Semenkiewicz surname filtered result

Edit2: I know you ask for Samankiewicz, but just in case, there is a tree for Anna Zarnowski that may match yours http://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000003688552291 and search results https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Aanna~%20%2Bsurname%3Azarnowsky~

My Polish ear could hear it as Szamankiewicz, according to Polish etymological works this derived from an old Polish name Szamania, this going from Polish language and word 'szaman'. Generally very very rare surname in the present-day Poland, according to Polish census 1990 they were only 2 adults in Poland surnamed Szamankiewicz, one from Warsaw, and one from Poznan:
Nazwisko Ogólna liczba Rozmieszczenie
Szamankiewicz	2 Wa:1, Po:1
source: www.herby.com.pl
The other version like a shortanage in pronounciation and typing would be Samankiewicz [S and SZ as equivalents].
So, your roots are Poles from Lithuania, or Lithuanians from an old Poland.
Hope this helps a bit, happy weekend!
Yes, His Birth Certificate says Lithuania. The only information that I could find wad from Genealogy.com and lists 2 Samanakiewicz form the Russians to America data. I have attached the listing. I don't have any old family pictures or records that would help unfortunately. Thanks again for your help.

Can you add some more info, when grandparents come to USA, what town they come from, any other info, it would be easier to find them on ship manifest.
You may be right.
I always thought that it may have been misspelled but I have no way to verify it.
I thought that maybe the person who filled out the birth certificate spelled it phonetically.
That is the spelling on my dad's birth certificate, Father is "Stanuslaws Samanakiewicz". Mother is Anna Zarnowski.
We grew up in upstate NY with my mother's relatives so we know very little of my dad's family who was in NJ.
Thanks for the reply.

How sure are you about that name? There is hardly any info to none about this name. Instead, there is plenty info about Sanakiewicz surname. Maybe it is mispelled Sarankiewicz or similar?
