Galicia 1914. In memoriam:

"W jednem miejscu stała kobieta, przyparta do baryery przepełnionej hali i rzewnie płakała. Usiłowałem ją pocieszyć. Łkając chwyta mnie za rękę i opowiada swoją bolesną historyę. Pochodzi z Rzeszowa. Miasto było 17 dni pod rosyjską inwazyą. W tym krótkim czasie było tam trzech komendantów. Pierwsi dwaj względnie ludzcy, ostatni postępował dość surowo. To przyczyniło się do tego, że ludność z obawy przed nową inwazyą opanowała taka trwoga, iż wszyscy bezmyślnie dopadali dworca."
//
In one place there was a woman, leaning to the barrier in a crowded hall and wept bitterly. I tried to comfort her. Weeping she grabs my hand and tells her painful history. She comes from Rzeszow. The city was 17 days under Russian invasion. In this short time, there were three commanders. The first two relatively human, the last one acted quite severely. This contributed to the such a fear of the new invasion, that the population mindlessly was rushing to the station.

Interesting topic for former Galicians.. It is really not common in mainstream historical media, which is strange while it occurs to be one of the biggest people movement inside of Austrian-Hungary Empire. Never heard of it. But after some search i found some very informative links in Polish language:
1. http://www.olejow.pl/readarticle.php?article_id=189
2. http://dabiehistoria.url.ph/strony/ewakuacja.html

It is about mass people movement from Galicia to other regions, people were separated according to their nationality by austrian government and settled in various locations, including Austria and Chech. People were escaping from territories occupied by Russian Army. Poles were settled in two camps: Leibnitz and Chocen. The second picture in first post shows long barracks in which refugees were living. I am gonna read more later.

Greetings,

I am trying to find information about Choceňské Polsko, a camp of thousands of Polish people, from Galicja, set up in 1914, few days before the WWI, in Czechy (Bohemia at that time).

Choceň is close to Vysoké Mýto, it's in Hradec Králové region, more than 600 km (accross Carpatian mountains) from Przemysl.
Map of railways give a hint for transportation:
http://www.chocen-litomysl.cz/historie-zeleznicni-mapy-cech-moravy-a-slezka.html

I cannot find anything in Polish, neither English about Choceňské Polsko.
But I do know that people from Przemysl were there, I even have an original birth record from 1915, with stamp of Przemysl parish on it.

This year is 100 anniversary, and a couple of articles in Czech are available.

http://orlicky.denik.cz/zpravy_region/pripomenou-chocenske-polsko-20140411.html
It states that 22000 people were here, and provides a number of death:
Obyvatele „kosily" infekční choroby. Historici hovoří o celkem 7895 mrtvých, z nichž bylo 2435 mužů, 2111 žen a 3349 dětí.

Here another article, with pictures - please click, you must see it, and title:
Choceňské Polsko vzniklo pro utečence. Zemřely v něm tisíce Poláků
http://pardubicky-kraj.5plus2.cz/chocen-polaci-prvni-svetova-dp9-/usti-nad-orlici.aspx?c=A140321_083442_ppd-usti-nad-orlici_p2bro

A PDF local news speaking about Choceňské Polsko
http://www.chocen-mesto.cz/VismoOnline_ActionScripts/File.ashx?id_org=5197&id_dokumenty=323327

Someone (thank you to him) put few old pics from Chocen online, see the last three:
http://www.chocen.info/fotky/index.html

I think that Bitwa Galicyjska / Battle of Galicia might give some lights
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitwa_galicyjska
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Galicia

I would like to know more. And to learn why I cannot find anything in Polish about it.

The attached pics are from Czech site.
