In 1920, Joseph Gubala Szaflarski, born Jan 6, 1890, lived at 4335 South Marshfield Avenue. If anyone ever sees him in a record, will you please let me know? Thank you!

I think this should be 4834 S. Marshfield instead of Nashville. They lived at 4831 S. Marshfield in the 1922 record.

Yes this was a great find that had a ton of extra info included. I just found 2 relatives who have a small family tree on Frank and Helen at Ancestry. I left a msg. for both of them to contact me. I'll forward it to you when they respond.

Also all of the listed addresses are in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, welcome to the BOY Ute!

Thanks, Bill. Of course you are right, Helena Penksa went to S. Marshfield Ave instead of S. Nashville Ave, as indicated in the ship manifest. And we found more Gorale families who lived in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Great!

Thank you so much! You are GREAT! The letter from Szaflary, written in 1922, is especially interesting. I assume it was written by Helen Lojas-Penksa's father from Szaflary. Helen Penksa returned to the US on March 23, 1924 from a visit to Poland. She was accompanied by her children Emily, 9 years old in 1924, Albin, 7 years old in 1924, Stella, 5 years old in 1924, and Angela, 3 years old in 1924. The are listed as US citizens and are all going to 4834, Nashville Ave., Chicago. I have more information on the Frank and Helen Penksa family that I'm going to post separately to keep the two Penksa families apart.

Is anyone researching the Penksa families in the district of Nowy Targ? I came across the name Maciej Penksa in my grandmother Julia Szot's passenger record of March 17, 1910 that indicated that she was going to join her uncle Maciej Penksa [misspelled Pekoza] at 615, Morgan Street, Chicago. Her brother Jan Szot (listed as "Jan Szob" in the index) also indicated that Maciej Penksa at 214, Des Plaines Avenue, Chicago was his destination when he came to the US on November 4, 1908.

When the 1910 Census for Chicago was taken on April 25, 1910, my grandmother Julia Szot and her brother Jan Szot lived as boarders with Maciej/Matthew Penska, 23, the person listed as uncle on my grandmother's ship manifest. The address matches the ship manifest: 615, Morgan Street, Chicago. Head of the household was Jan Penksa, 23, wife Maggie, 23, and a boarder Joseph Szaflarski, 20.

Maciej Penksa and Magdalena Obryk were married in November 1906 in Chicago. Their marriage licence was issued on November 5, 1906 at the Office of Peter B. Olsen, County Clerk of the County of Cook and the Seat Thereof. According to the marriage licence, Maciej Penksa was 24 years old and Magdalena Obryk was 22 years old at the time. They were married on November 18, 1906 by Reverend A. Rebec at St. Wenceslaus Church, 186, W. Taylor St., Chicago. Unfortunately, their church marriage record doesn't give the bride's and groom's parents' names nor the names of marriage witnesses. Maciej's father may have been Jan Penksa from Czarny Dunajec.

I'm not sure if this is the same Maciej Penksa who traveled to the US in 1911. In the Ellis Island database I found a Maciej Penksa, 32 years old in 1911 (born abt. 1879), farm laborer, married, wife Magdalena, 32 years old, and child Jan Penksa, 8 years old in 1911 (born abt. 1903) who traveled to the US on board of the steamship 'Zeeland' that left Antwerp on Oct. 21, 1911 and arrived in New York on Oct. 31, 1911. Their ethnicity was Polish, their residence and contact abroad was Maciej's father Jan Penksa in Czarny Dunajec, their destination in the US was Maciej's brother Joseph Penksa who lived at 1930, W. Erie Street, Chicago at the time.

They were accompanied by Elsbieta Penksa, 31 years old, married, and her son Franciszek Penksa, 2 years old in 1911. Their residence and contact abroad was Elsbieta's father Jan Penksa in Czarny Dunajec also, their destination in the US was (husband/father) Franciszek Penksa who lived at at 1020, W. Erie Street, Chicago at the time.

I have not been able to find out what became of Maciej/Matthew and Magdalena/Maggie Penksa. I would like to find out more about the family, because Magdalena Obryk-Penksa may have been my great-grandmother Agata Obryk's sister or at least a close relative. I would also like to find out more about Jan Penksa and his wife Maggie (Magdalena).

There is also a connection to a Helen Penksa, nee Lojas who was most likely from Szaflary. She married Franciszek Penksa. Helen and Franciszek Penksa were godparents to two of my grandmother's sister Anna Szot's children.
