Thank you both so much! Like I said, I haven't been able to do much research in a while, but now you've gotten me all excited again! I had planned to get back to working on it now that the "cold" weather is setting in and I'm not out gardening and boating. I'm going to get started this weekend. I'll definitely be in touch once I find more info.

I'm glad to help. If you have any other questions about Lutcza, feel free to ask because i'm researching my family there as we speak.

Also, let me know what you find about your family tree. My grandfather from Lutcza, his last name is Mandela. His grandmother's maiden name was Janusz. So maybe our family trees are connected somewhere.
Jane,

The other suggestions are very good, but I suggest you go right to the source. Lutcza is a small village in Poland, and typically small villages have only one Parish/church. The church in Lutcza dates back to the 1400s (I think) and they have records going back to the 1800s. Being the only Parish, they have records of almost everyone's birth, baptism, or death. My research shows that Janusz, Jarosz, Turon, Mazur, and Mandela are all common family surnames there and there are still many people with those last names living there today.

A few years ago I was researching my grandfather (Stanislaw Mandela), so I sent an email asking for info to the parish in Lutcza with my grandfather's birth date and after a few weeks they responded with a written description of my grandfather's family going back to my grandfather's grandfather in the 1850s. They even told me that my grandfather's father died during an accident while constructing a chimney. Anyway, it was a lot of good information. My suggestion is that your email be written in Polish, since the parish is nice enough to do the research for you, don't want to burden them with translating your email also.

Here is the email address for the Parish:
lutcza@rzeszow.opoka.org.pl

Here is the main website for the Parish:
http://lutcza.rzeszow.opoka.org.pl/

The website also has detailed archives online from the past 15 years. Just looking at the archive for 2014 it shows there was one wedding and two deaths in the Janusz family. Archive for 2013 shows one wedding and one baptism for the Janusz family. I think there is a large Janusz family there.
http://lutcza.rzeszow.opoka.org.pl/strony/archiwum.htm

After you have a good idea of what your family tree looks like, and you would like to try to contact possible family members in Lutcza, I would try facebook. Search for facebook members with the last name Janusz that live in Lutcza, Poland. I did a quick search on facebook and right off the bat I found 6 people on facebook with the last name Janusz that live in Lutcza. I'll leave it to you to figure out which ones you're related to...

Send me a message if you need help with anything else,
Yesterday I found a resource online on familysearch.org that describes step-by-step how to trace your ancestry in Poland. What a valuable resource! I wish I had found it earlier. I've just been learning as I go along. I'm a retired teacher who has always promoted "life long learning." I guess I'm an example of that!

One quick question...how were you able to access those birth records? Does that come from years of experience researching your ancestry?

I have some additional info that I found this afternoon that suggests my grandmother might have been born in 1888, not 1892. Are those birth records for Lutcza available too?

I truly appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Thanks again!
Jane,

You are welcome. There are many online sources, one just needs to get familiar with how to locate the correct village or parish. Lutcza records are available only between 1889-1903. You may want to write to the address below and ask them where you can find records prior to those years:
Archiwum Państwowe w Rzeszowie
35-064 Rzeszów, ul. Bożnicza 2
tel: (17) 852-93-50, 850-10-99
fax: 853-83-04
email: sekretariat@rzeszow.ap.gov.pl
www.rzeszow.ap.gov.pl
Thank you SO much Gilberto!!!! You have been so very helpful. It's motivated me to keep plugging along....even if slowly. Every little bit of information helps piece my family's puzzle together.

None of the sites such as ancestry.com or familysearch.org have any information even when I specifically search in Poland. I probably need to search on microfilm, but I have no clue as to where my grandmother was even born.

My grandmother's maiden name was Marya Janusz and her parents were John Janusz and Franciszka Wieszczek. All I know is she was born somewhere in Poland. She emigrated to the USA, sometime around 1907 according to the census. She always told us she was 14 years old when she arrived with her mother's friend and they settled in Fall River, Massachusetts. Her birth date is listed as abt. 1892.

My grandfather was Jacob Pitera and his parents were John Pitera and Zofiz Kryska. I found his birth date and birthplace on his WWI draft registration...November 28, 1891 in Lutcza, Strzyzow. I have not found any records for his emigration to the United States yet either.

Does anyone recognize any of these names or can you shed any light on my search to find information about their lives in Poland? I do have their marriage certificate from Fall River, Massachusetts (which is how I got their parents' names) and information from their census. My mother is 89 and the last of the children still living. She can tell me a lot about their lives here in the states, but knows nothing about anything that took place in Poland.

Any information would be much appreciated!

Thank you,
Jane,

Geneteka database show Jozef Janusz + Maryanna Wieszczek's children in Lutcza, between 1890-1899. No Marya(nna) listed. However, Lutcza birth records between 1889-1903 are online here:(columnar formant, no indexes.
http://szukajwarchiwach.pl/59/1309/0/-/1?q=lutcza&wynik=3&rpp=15&page=1#tabSkany
Her arrival must be nr. 9 (image below)

Jakob Pitera birth record online, but mother's surname is not Kryska (Dudek):
record 93, 1891. 4th record, right side of the page.
