Gadzooks! I just happened to come across this today (03/26/2015) and have this to add.
I am a 68 year old male. All of my ancestors are from Southern Poland and Northern Ukraine. My DNA suggests 100% "Eastern European" ethnicity with conforms to my genealogical research. Recently I went to the Veterans Administration medical services to find out that I am on a very close "watch" for both glaucoma and macular degeneration. I've noticed a blurry spot in my vision and was having it checked out. I've decided I have over used my lazer beam blue eyes over my lifetime.

Hi Shellie,
I just ran across this post, as you know my maternal GrandFather was from Odrowaz, he did not have eyesight issues. However, my father, Edward Majka whose family was from Niwiska (Kolbuszowa Rzeszow) had the disease. He also had glacoma. Interesting topic.

This is an interesting discussion!

For what it's worth: my dad has macular degeneration as does his sister and their deceased brother. I don't know if the disease comes from his dad's side or his mom's. His father's family (surname Laszczak) is from Wysokie near Zamosc (southeast Poland) and his mom's family (surname Glodek) from Czarna (near Lancut and Rzeszow — also southeast).

My siblings and I know that the disease is hereditary, so we have to be fairly diligent about regular eye appointments.

Thanks for the reply Phil. It is just as interesting to me to know that your family members DID NOT acquire macular degeneration.

It will be really interesting to see if I can narrow down some specific areas. My family and I were just discussing how interesting it is to follow the inherited traits back through our families. It has even interested some of my family members who were otherwise not interested in genealogy.

Now I need to start reading some genetics texts about the subject!

Both of my father's paternal grandparents, surnames Kulawiak and Kadłub,
were from Odrowaz Podhalanski in the Malopolskie area of South West Poland. All of my grandfather's siblings developed macular degeneration and progressively lost their eyesight.

I'm curious about whether other families from my Podhale area village have this eye affliction.

If your family comes from the Podhale or Orawa area of Poland/Slovakia and your family members suffered from macular degeneration, I'd like to hear from you. I find this medical genealogy issue quite interesting.
