Fantastic news that you are connecting with distant cousins!

Regarding the Ruthenian heritage, I don't know what to tell you. It has been explained various times on this forum, but of course you can google it as well. My own point of view is that when your grandfather claims a particular heritage, you should believe him. It does not mean that other members of the family might not have identified differently. So I would say, go ahead and explore it, learn about, and keep an open mind until you can find one way or another a document about your specific ancestors that is convincing to you. Just my two cents!

If you have been looking at maps and such to learn about Cewkow, you have probably discovered its proximity to Dzikow, from which town another Naslaniec family member originated (indexed as "Peranka Naslanica" on Ellis Island website, arrival 1914, heading to Detroit). Dzikow actually is two villages, the old (Stary Dzikow) and the new (Nowy Dzikow). I am mentioning all of this because when villages are too small to effectively have their own government, they group together into a "Gmina" or district. The village of Cewkow is in the Gmina of Stary Dzikow, and that Gmina has a lovely website: http://www.starydzikow.pl/pl

Even if you do not read Polish, you can explore the website and look at some great pictures. Click on the menu choice "O Nas" ("About Us") and it will give you choices. You can deduce many of them from the similarity to English - - Historia = history, Demografia = demographics. When you find something that looks really interesting, copy it into an online translator like Google Translate to get a translation (albeit sometimes a bit rocky, as translations are usually better when done by humans!). Another menu item on the Gmina's website is Parafia which leads you to 3 choices, including one which is the church in Cewkow.

I just got in touch with a new distant cousin, and there is a large Naslanic (Naslaniec) family in the Chicago and Detroit areas. The "Ruthenian" designation is curious to me. My grandfather claimed Polish heritage, and I was never told anything different. However, this new branch of the Naslanic clan claim Ukrainian heritage, and they are fairly certain. This has now opened up a new family mystery!

Hi Dave,
I spent some time looking for a ship passenger list for Julius; no luck so far. To your question about Cewkow, it does not sound very much like Chepka or Czepka but I do think it may be the right place of origin of your family. I came across an "Anastazya Nastanyce" who arrived at Ellis Island in 1910, whose hometown was indexed as "Cewkow, Austria." I initially dismissed her since she was listed as Ruthenian and headed to Detroit.

I did see your tree on Ancestry, and wonder if it is possible that he and Agnes had a sixth child. Take a look at the Pennsylvania death certificate indexed as "Adam Naslance", who was born and died on the same day in 1921. Father listed as "Julus Naslanec" and mother as "Agneska Neca."

I just received a new piece of the puzzle. I think Stephan (Steve) Naslanic that you mentioned above could possibly be my great-grandfather's brother. Another town name that I was just told is "Cewkow" which is in the vicinity of Cieszanów. Do you think it's possible that this unknown "Chepka" or "Czepka" could be phonetically confused with Cewkow? If so, I may have found the origin of the Naslaniec clan! I am going to do more digging, but I am grateful for your help. All I have known up until now is Galicia.

Breslau did not arrive on March 25, 1904/5/6/7/8 or 9.
On Breslau arrivals from 1901 to 1920:
by month March: it ony arrived in March, 14 1908
by date 25 : it only arrived on Feb 25 and 27 1905

Just a little idea. I did not see naturalisation document, so I might be wrong.

While Chepka or Czepka let think about Czapka, I see another option: Czapla or Czaple (that is heron bird in English, or herons).

Possible Czaple (in Galicia) is near Mszana Dolna, Poland.

Yes, that is my great-grandfather's headstone. So, I did find sources under several names:

Julius Naslaniec
Julius Nasłaniec

I have 1920 Census, WWI Draft, and his death certificate. I also have several city idrectories.

Now, this is the most confusing: I have all of his naturalization documents. This is where I found the origin of Chepka or Czepka. His port of entry is listed as NY City, aboard the vessel "Breslau", departed Hamburg, Germany on 9 Mar 1905 and landed on 25 Mar 1905. As you already found out, we can't find Chepka. Also, I can't find a manifest, or even a ship with the name Breslau, traveling from Hamburg to NYC on those dates! None of it seems to be true...

I though I found the mother lode of inofrmation on my great-grandfather when I found his naturalization documents, but even the date of arrival and the vessel listed are incorrect! This is a black hole in my research. I will keep digging and will ask any more questions that I may come up with here.

Actually, I am not pretty sure of the village name. I have just considered that Naslaniec is not a common surname and, moreover, there is no Czepka ou Chepka in what was then Galicia. I have even considered Szepka, but nothing came up. The closest phonetic match I have found was that for Steve's village. Also, no Czepka or Chepka in SGKP. A Chepka is mentioned here: http://www.landbrot.de/uploads/media/Dolpo_Travel_Report_September_2014.pdf

Ah, I just saw the draft registration. I have Julius Naslaniec's WWI draft registration. His birthplace is just "Austria Hungary" on that document.

Sorry, I should have added more info. My great-grandfather is Julius Naslaniec, born in Galicia in 1885 and immigrated to Scranton, PA in 1905. He died there in 1928.

How are you sure that is the modern village name? Several items on his Naturalization papers are incorrect, and I was afraid that his origin in Galicia was also wrong.

I am trying to find the surname Nasłaniec in a town in Poland. I have my great-grandfather's naturalization documents. They state his town of origin/brith as "Czepka" or "Chepka" in Aust./Pol. He immigrated in 1905.

I would be grateful for any assistance. All of my great-grandfather's origins are a mystery to the family, as he died young and my great-grandmother remarried here in the US. A proper history was not kept.
