I will send you a link to our family tree: it's probably the most complete family tree you will find for the Ofsoski/Ofsoske name. Please feel free to update/add your details or correct anything that doesn't look right: you should be able to edit the family tree.

Cheers
Hi Eve & Hayden, I am also related to you both and am Greg Ofsoski's cousin (your dad Eve). I am trying to locate a copy of our family tree and hope that you can both help. I have some information but am looking to fill in the gaps and see what information there is already so I don't go duplicating data that has already been researched. My mother is one of the last generation still alive and I have managed to find out some personal details on our ancestors etc from her, but would like to sit down with her and go through the tree and data and see what else she can tell us before it gets lost in history. I can be contacted at aerinp AT ihug.co.nz. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you both.
Regards
It's been great - thanks for having the forum available for people like us!

So the family that emigrated to New Zealand is as follows:

MARTIN OSSOWSKI was born in 1824 in Prussia. Martin died on 7 November 1892, aged about 68.
ANNA (ANNIE) RICHARD? (OSSOWSKA) was born in 1826 in Prussia. Anna died in 1893, aged about 67, in Carterton NZ.

Martin Ossowski married Anna and they had five children:
Berta Ofsoski in 1863
Juliana Ofsoski in 1864
Rosalie Ofsoski in 1867
Johan Ofsoski in 1869
Franciszek Ofsoski in 1872

Johan and Franciszek were responsible for carrying on the Ofsoski/Ofsoske surnames in New Zealand. You will find that Johan carried on the Ofsoski name, and Franciszek carried on the Ofsoske name (though there are some "i" and "e" spelling variations in each branch")

Even if you live in the same city, maybe even next door, in any part of the world, there is a chance that sooner or later someone interested in the same family (YOUR family) or in the same place will find you .

Great to hear from you... indeed, we share common ancestors - mine is the Johan line. I did some research myself and I can send you the link if you like (I have a tree on myheritage and ancestry.com) My hotmail is hayden_ofsoski AT hotmail.com . Has your side of the family found anything from the Prussian days? I've gotten stuck whenever I try to trace the Prussian side, though I have considered contracting a genealogist over there to try to do some digging.

I too am in sydney so thats bizarre - i'm 27 and live in St Leonards.

Would be great to hear from you!

Cheers
Hi Hayden,

My name is Eve Ofsoske and I live in Sydney. My family emigrated from Prussia in 1875 on the boat 'Shakespeare', which left Hamburg and went to Wellington, New Zealand (I think). Martin Ossowski and his wife Anne had six children, one of which was Franciszek (aged 3 at the time of emigration) who is my line of ancestry. My mother spent a lot of time on the genealogy of our family, I will see if I can scan a copy of the family tree to send to you tomorrow if you like.

I am 29yo - over the years the family seperated, with a line of OFSOSKE and another line of OFSOSKI which are dispersed across New Zealand. I have a copy of the original emigration notice found in the Auckland library about 15 years ago which I could send to you also.

I would be interested to hear more about what you may have found out?

Thanks,

Hello Hayden,

All versions: Osowski, Ossowski and Osiowski have the same root Osow-. These surnames derive from one of many places names in Poland such as Osów, Osowa, Osowie, Osowo, Ossowo.

In 2002 there were 5368 people using the surname Osowski (men) and Osowska (women) living in Poland. One thousand more people (6375) used surname Ossowski (Ossowska). Detailed map of the surnames distribution can be found here: http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/osowski.html , http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/osowska.html , http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/ossowski.html , http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/ossowska.html .

If you look closer at the maps you will notice that the biggest concentration of the Osowski and Ossowski people is in northern part of today's Poland in counties: Tczew, Starogard, Koscierzyna, Chojnice. These area before WWII belonged to Prussia, however many Polish people lived there for centuries.

In 19th century there were 8 noble Ossowski families, mainly coming from following towns: Ossowa in Sandomierz region, Ossów in Pomerania, Ossowa Sień in Mazovia, Ossów in Kujawy region, Ossów in Czchów region.
Hi Everyone,

I have been trying in vein to trace back my heritage, however this seems to be quite difficult because the name has had a number of changes over the years.

My ancestors were originally from Prussia and emigrated to New Zealand from Hamburg in 1875. The ship (Shakespeare) had a record for the Osowski family. The name is today spelt Ofsoski. There are other family names in New Zealand with the name Ofsoske however we all came from the same family that came out in 1875.

Does anyone have any clues or suggestions? My next step is to potentially enlist a professional genealogist.

Cheers
