I have found this site as I was searching informations about my ancestry. I'm Damian Mącznik, I'm living in small town Jawor in western Poland, but my grandpa Marian Mącznik was born in Mistrzowice in 1924 and I have visited this village this year... There are only few houses, so I'm sure my Marian was related to Filip. I have to find how exactly.

Thank you very much for you fast response here and in pms/emails. I have sent you responses with more details.

I want to let all of you interested in Odrowaz parish records know that there is a good chance that we will be able to access the specific records with help of local parishioners but only after the Tour with Szymusiak family.

And the births from Zaluczne for years 1899 - 1904 were available in Czarny Dunajec.

The records are in separate books in the village, but the researcher who went to the archive said the records are in the same book there. Next person who goes to the archive can let us know for sure!!

Yes, it's very sad that the priest seems to think that searching for ancestors is some covert operation. He needs to realize that we are people whose families were torn from our homeland, and all we seek is a connection - certainly not monetary gain...

It makes me so sad to hear that the priest is so uncooperative. I know so many people who are desperately trying to research their ancestors from Zaluczne. This is what I was told can be found in Archdiocese of Krakow. Odrowaz and Zaluczne are in the same registry book:

I am writing this from Odrowaz where I am with my honorable guests from Pennsylvania. I have to share with you that it is the third time within the last few months when priest here was not cooperative at all. Two of our guides visited him in the last few months and this time it was me with the Szymusiak family. The priest just said that because he had bad experience with other researchers who supposedly wanted to photograph whole books and sell them, now only the parishioners are allowed to check the records. But when we told him that we would come tomorrow or the day after tomorrow with relatives from the parish we had found he said... that he has no time for us. I am sorry to say that but this is how the situation in the parish office looks like now.

So there is my request to you on behalf of myself and my guests, Szymusiak family, before we undertake any other means to discover their ancestors. Does any of you have access to Zaluczne books (photographs?) from following dates:

1861 (birth)

1898 (marriage)

Births: 1899, 1900, 1902, 1904

We will be grateful for any help.

Unfortunately the birth record for Agnieszka was not online. It is also unfortunate that the Odrowąż church records were not filmed by the LDS, so there is no microfilm to order from the Family History Library. Copies of church records from other areas in Poland were sent to National Archives, and some of those now can be seen online. UNFORTUNATELY, our area of Poland was not required to send copies, so the National Archives has nothing from the Odrowąż church . The Archdiocese of Kraków has copies of many years from the Odrowąż church. A group of us, lead by Shellie who started this Odrowąż thread, hired a researcher to get some records from the Archdiocese of Kraków. Hiring a genealogist, or writing to the priest in Odrowąż, or finding family in Poland that might know something, or finding your ancestors names in an online tree (and hoping that tree is accurate) are the only options I can think of at the moment. I'm going to send you a private email through Polish Origins.

Agnieszka Mrożek was born 27 Jan 1883 in house #117 in Odrowąż. Her father was Józef Mrożek and her mother was Tekla Biernat. Józef's parents were Bartłomiej Mrożek and Rozalia Głowacz. Tekla's parents were Michał Biernat and Marianna Dusza. Agnieszka had sisters Anna b. 1880 and Marta b. 1887, and brothers Jan b. 1878 and Andrzej b. 1889. I am no relation (that I know of). My family is from nearby Załuczne, but the only surname that I have in common is Biernat.

I read in the original post on this thread a list of surnames associated with Odrowaz. One of the surnames, Mrozek, is of great interest to me. My great grandmother was named Agnieszka (Agnes) Mrozek. She came to the US from Odrowaz in 1906. Her father is listed as Joseph Mrozek and her mother as Tekla in one source and Tillie Dusor in another source.

According to a letter sent to me by a great aunt, Agnes was married to a man in Odrowaz and had 3 children with him (names unknown). After her husband died, she left her children with relatives and came to the US, where she married Martin J. Kulak, who had come to the US from Galicia in 1910. Together they had 9 children, 1 of whom was stillborn and 1 who died at 7 months. They were settled in Chicago, mainly on 21st Street.

I have just started researching this branch of my tree. If anyone on the forum has information on Mrozek or Kulak, I would very grateful for the help.

Hi All,
I can't help noticing the post from Uncle Gregg stating that his Great Grandmother was Mary Kosla from Pilsno. My grandmother on my Dad's side, the Majka's, was Anna Kosla born in Pilsno in 1885. She had a sister, Maria. Her father was John Kosla and mother was Theresa Matray.

My grandfather on my Mom's side was John Dzielawa from Odrowaz.

Re: I didn't think Baranów Sandomierski was the right Baranów because at this point you have to cross the Vistula R. to be in the Kingdom of Poland. That's why I chose the other Baranów near Lublin which most definitely is in the Kingdom of Poland based on the 1904 map I was using.

Ute, I wouldn't discount the death record of Wladyslaw because the mother is not correct. Much of the information in Chicago Death Certificates in 1925 was entered by the undertaker based on what was provided to him by the informant (who was named on the cert.). The information could be 100% accurate or it could by 90% incorrect. On my maternal great grandmother's cert. from 1925 her youngest son was the informant and the only pieces of information he got correct were her given and maiden names and the name of her late husband (his father). Her father's name, his village of birth, her village of birth, her age, her date of birth, etc. were all far from correct. I don't know why he was the informant since he had seven older siblings living in the neighborhood who could have provided the correct information. Fortunately, I did not have to depend on that cert. to move the research along.

P.L., I believe that you are absolutely correct to discount the Baranow in Galicia as the place of her birth and the place you mentioned is a very likely choice. There are two other villages in the Russian Partition closer to Galicia which would be possibilities except that they are not the site of a parish church and another village can be discounted because it was in the Prov. of Posen. But there is another place which could possibly fit the bill since it was the site of a parish and was in the Russian Partition---the village listed in powiat kaski. It appears that the Steven on the 1930 Census is the child of Filip & Jozefa and the problem is that his age was not listed correctly on the census. There is an index of the birth of a Steven Joseph Macznik who was born on 3/13/1920 to Philip Macznik and Josephine Kotlinska.

Heather, My suggestion would be begin building your evidence by obtaining birth & death certificates from the Cook County Clerk's website and possibly obtaining the birth certificate from Holy Innocents for Ladislaus Philippus Macznik and seeing what information those records contain before moving back in time.

Thanks Elzbieta & Ute for the suggestions on saving the map image. I don't have MS Office on my new laptop, but use the free LibreOffice which saves in Word format so that MS Word will open the document. I did use PRT SC to take a screen shot and then pasted into my Word document and I was able to crop the image to eliminate the unnecessary parts of the image, BUT when I right click on the image I do not get an option to Save or Save As. So I couldn't save the image and attach to my PO post. Thank you Ute for posting the map.

The village Mistrzowice is about 2.5 mi. north of Rogów on this map, so if that's Filip's village it would make sense that he would be traveling with people from Rogów.

I didn't think Baranów Sandomierski was the right Baranów because at this point you have to cross the Vistula R. to be in the Kingdom of Poland. That's why I chose the other Baranów near Lublin which most definitely is in the Kingdom of Poland based on the 1904 map I was using.

In the 1930 census Phillip Moncznik (49) and Josephine (40) have 3 children – Marie (Mary Francis) 18, Stephin 12 (must be Josephine's from a previous marriage if born in 1918) and Florence 8 (must be the child Ute found the birth record for in 1922). All are listed as children of Phillip (no step-children). Age at first marriage for Phillip was 29 and for Josephine was 28 (which would be 1917 or 1918). In the Marriage column both have an M crossed out and both have a second M written in, so this could mean both have been married twice. ~PL
