Hi again Jerry,
This is a very interesting website that talks about the efforts in Jersey City of conserving stained glass windows. http://jclandmarks.org/campaign-stainedglasswindows.shtml
Whether or not it turns out that St. Ann's in Jersey City is the correct church for your Poremski window, this does at least open up another route of research for you - - finding people like Leon Yost (he is named in that website as a photographer who has been inventorying stained glass windows in that city) and contacting them to see if your window is in their collection of photographs. Also, there is a note with each church on this list of which studio made the stained glass windows for that church (although not clear to me, with St. Ann's, whether they mean the original stained glass windows or the replacement set) and this is also a great clue for you, because there are vastly different styles among the different studios. If you can narrow down to which studio produced your window, by its artistic style, you may be able to figure out which church it was in.
Lots of homework, I know!
Good luck with it.
Hi Jerry,
I hope that lead works out for you! Maybe a phone call will get better results.
I am fairly sure that you are looking at a window that was made in the U.S. because of the spelling of the surname. It is not that "Poremski" is unheard of as a spelling in Poland, but my best guess is that the original spelling was "Porębski" so perhaps you may look for records for Jan and Antonina that way.
Let us know how it goes...
I remember your suggestion and back then did email the secretary of the parish and never heard back. I will now try phone contacts to see if I can get anyone that knows of the old windows and the Poremski family.
You are kind to keep trying to help!
Best regards,
Hi Jerry,
I remember this thread from last March. At that time, I suggested that you look in Jersey City, NJ for info on the Poremski family, since I had seen a reference to Antonina Poremski being a donor at St. Ann's Church. Just to follow through on that, this link takes you to an article from 2011 that talks about St. Ann's and mentions that they were getting NEW STAINED GLASS WINDOWS.
http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/index.ssf/2011/07/st_ann_church_polish_parish_in.html
I do think it is worth contacting them, to see if they have archived photos of their old windows. Yours may be among them.
Best of luck in your search,
