Hugh,

I checked Hoffman's "Polish Surnames" and here is what I found concerning Dowiat surname:
polonized form of Lith. dithematic name Daujotas < dau-
“much, very” + jóti, “to ride a horse” [R].

Hoffman is mentioning 2 surnames with this origins: Dowiat (70 people in Poland in 2002 with this surname: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Dowiat) and Dowjat (43 people living in Poland in 2002: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Dowjat

Hello my Polish origins friends.

I was hoping someone here with an understnading of Polish names and the language and general could answer this question. I have ancestors with the surname Dowiat or more commonly Dowiatt in my records. I have been made aware this is the Polonizationof a Lithuanian surname. My question has to do with some old Latin Records I found online. The parish is the ancestral parish of my Dowiatt ancestors and the year of birth in the records and the first names of the sons is also correct.

The problem is the name isn't spelled like I am used to: it is spelled Dowjat. My question is the name Dowjat it's own surname or is this likely a different spelling, or mispelling of my ancestors names??

I can link the scan of the register page if anyone would like to see with their own eyes.

Thanks.
