My good friend Haloosia Rogalinska sent me a current aerial view of Rusinowa Polana and Hala Jaworzyna Rusinowa. This map shows the individual parcels of land ownership. A few of the Shepard huts are still standing. Look for the tiny red squares at the edge of the lots. (click on photo to enlarge)

Mark, the state archives can handle English or Polish. Polish is preferred. Go to www.pgsa.org they have a form you can download, fill out, and send to the archives. They have a list for addresses of the churches also. And I was referring to emailing someone in Podhale, my cousin cannot understand regular Polish, and Google translate is useless. But I'm sure there are other folks who can, just depends on who you connect with. Good luck-no problem with the help. Bill

I didn't realize that the Goral had their own dialect, interesting. I will have to find someone who speaks the dialect and write in Polish Goral to the State Archives. Would anyone here on the Polish Origins site know the mailing address or email address?

Most of the local churches will not answer your letter, especially if it's written in English. You are better off writing to the State Archives. I was lucky to have several friends visit the places I needed info from and they copied and photographed the records. Contact by email? I hope you can speak Polish/Goral-some of my relatives cannot understand regular Polish. The Góral have their own language.

Bill,

I realized that you can not research these villages in the Nowy Targ area, but maybe you can point me in the right direction. My maternal family Dzielski comes from Dzial and Czarny Dunejac. Also, my maternal grandmother was an Bienias who married an Antoni Truchon, I believe in Krauszow, Poland. Antoni Truchon died in 1909 in New York and Anna Bienias/Truchon remarried my grandfather Vincenti Dzielski. I did send for some information to the church in Krauszow, but never received any reply. Don't know, if the letter with my donation got lost or stolen. I would deeply like to make a contact thru email to the Dzielski families in Dzial and the Bienias in Krauszow. I believe the church is still there in both villages.

If you are curious about the word "Redyk" it actually translates as a single word to cover a phrase which means the movement of sheep which can mean up or down the mountain pasture at the beginning and then the end of summer.

The head shepherd who is called a "baca" (pronounced bot-tah) before he drives his large flock of sheep up onto the mountain pastures, at the same time the baca and "juhas" (young helpers) hold up their ciupaga's over his flock to make a sign of the cross. This ancient custom is called "redyk", which is a solemn moving out of the sheep flock. At one time it was one of the most important events of the year for the Góral which was celebrated with the church and villagers. The local folk would say their solemn goodbyes and shepherds would leave their village to spend the whole summer with their flocks up in the mountain pastures (polana). They leave Groń and head to Rusinowa Polana several miles away leading the sheep and sometimes cattle. Now at Rusinowa Polana in the little huts up on the mountain side (1200 meters/3,937 ft in elevation) they would work each day by milking and carrying water from the flowing mountain streams to make their famous traditional "oscypek", a smoked cheese made of sheep's milk. The tradition of making this delicious cheese goes back to the 16th century.

Bartek Rusin a soltys (village administrator) and later Jan Rusin's family was given control of Rusinowa Polana (Rusin's meadow and Rusin's forest) in 1628 by an endowment from Zygmunt III Vasa, king of Poland. Then in 1650 the king of Poland, Jan Kazimierz, put in heredity, the Gęsią Szyja (goose neck) a adjacent clearing endowed to Karol Rusin.
