Generally the census information will provide the year of immigration, which might provide a starting point in locating his immigration passenger listing for more detail on town of origin and the spelling of the surname. Have you tried that? What was your g.grandfathers first name? You've indicated three spelling variations, which documents did they come from? Did he have any brothers or sisters here? Have you looked up birth records of his children born in the U.S.?

Sometimes you have to cast a really wide net to reel in a very small tid-bit which will lead, eventually, to more information.

If you can provide some details on what you have found I can try some searches through my Ancestry.com account.
