[quote="timmyj109"]One of my maternal lines goes back to the Gronkow, Nowy Targ area up until they emigrated to the USA around 1890. This side of the family always said they were Slovak, but this area is currently in Poland. Has this area been historically Poland or do you think it is more likely that they were Slovaks living in Poland at the time or was this area not always Polish? There are several distinct surnames, so what is the likelihood of 4 or 5 different families all being Slovak living in Poland?
Dzien Dobry (Good Morning),

All Pols are Slavs. Folks from Lithuania, Poland, Czech(Slovakia), Ukraine, Russia Etc all derived from the Slav ppl. Over time, they grouped to different parts of eastern Europe.

You may be related to Rob Gronkowski. The Ski in the name literally translates to "from". Rob "from" Gronkow.

It is very likely that you will see people of Poles, Slovak, Rusyns and even German ethnicities in Gronkow! This is based on actual research in Gronkow Records as well as surrounding Podhale Region. KAM

Both options are possible. I have couple of great grandparents that are Czech and they lived in the middle of Poland.
Names of your ancestors may be a clue...
