FYI:
PGSA Chicago Marriage database lists a John Szeliga & Anna Sobula marrying on 24 May 1909 at St. John Cantius church.

Off the top of my head I can't remember how much information St. John Cantius would normally include. Sometimes it is a lot, sometimes it is nothing.

But from here, you can look manually at the FamilySearch images for the Chicago churches, which only have a fraction indexed and thus do NOT come up automatically with the search function.

There are also more Szeligas and Seligas in the PGSA marriage lists. And depending on how close to the city your relatives stayed, you could also check their Dziennik Chicagoski death records databases (there are two). It won't give you the actual obit, but you can order them from PGSA for relatively inexpensively. Or if you are in the Chicago area, you can visit them and search the microfilm yourself, paying for any printed copies.

I have found these three sources to often be more helpful than indexed info from Cook Co. on the big sites.

Still haven't heard back from the archdiocese. I'll keep you posted.

Here are some sideways paths that may eventually lead somewhere.

Did you see this Garb - Szeliga connection?
In the 1910 census a Stanley Szeliga was a boarder in the household of Peter Garb. Stanley is on the next page of the census. He is 18 and immigrated in 1909. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MKZ9-1HH

And this possible Seliga - Sobola connection? Mary Seliga and Katie Sobolia were both boarding at the same residence.

Hello Amy,

You may have already seen these records, but if not, they may be worth checking out to see if they match your ancestors.

Using the spelling that Taddys suggested - Szeliga I found an immigration record on March 23 1905 on the Oldenburg for Jan Szeliga https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JF36-7MJ Note age says 16 in index and 15 on record. He was from Klikuszowa going to his aunt, Zofia Garb in Chicago. The year differs from the one on naturalization but the date is only a day apart. Note, FamilySearch is free, but you need to register.

In May 1909 there is a marriage indexed for Jan Seliga and Anna Sabola. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N7HY-Y55

In 1917 the WWI draft registration shows a John Seliga in Kankakee IL with a birthdate of Feb 11, 1889. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K6DK-56B

On the 1920 Naturalization records on the Petition for Naturalization, it shows his wife Anna also from Klikuszowa. Note, I never totally trust any one US record to be correct.

I don't believe anything is online. When I contacted them in Feb to confirm whether documents existed for this parish in this particular archive, a priest confirmed that reading copies existed and the originals should be with the parish. Unfortunately at the time their reading room was undergoing renovation so that put a hold on searching.

If they are easier to work with than the Gniezno Archdiocese, I'll let you know when I find out. My recent email with questions about access hasn't yet been answered. I have a feeling it may be a few weeks with Easter coming up soon.

Looking to find out information on my Great Grandparents who arrived in the USA in approx. 1903
Jan (John) Joseph Seliga born 14 Feb 1889 in Kilkuszowa Nowy Targ Austria according to the Naturalization papers.
The story is that he was in a Monastery studying to become a Priest. (They think it was a German Monastery) He ended up having an affair with the housekeeper (my Great Grandmother) and they ran away to the US.
Her name is Anna B. Sobola born 15 October 1888 in Nowy Targ Austria
John may have a brother names Stanislaw (Stanley) John Seliga born 28 March 1891 in Kilkuszowa Nowy Targ
We don't know any of their parents names or any other siblings
Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.
