I know of one person that receive the proper letter from the archives and did receive the record. There is more hope today that it will make it's destination, and that an honest employee will reply. They don't ask for checks or cash.
Google the archives for Belarus. Get their address and write to them in English. They have translators. They'll write to you. I don't recall if they have an email address. Probably do. I've never writen to them, but I know others who have had success with their help. My family is from inside today's Poland. Belarus is still a Communist country.

Yes, still communist. So, use caution.

Some years back, I wrote to a Belarus archive with the names I was looking for. Two weeks later I received a tiny envelope with a Belarus stamp and return address. It was about a 3 x 2 inch tiny. A tissue paper thin letter asked for $300 to be sent to a name and address that had no relationship to the archive I wrote to. Nothing was explained as to what they would do for me, it was just a request for payment, and where to send it..

Of course I didn't. I did write to a number of genealogy email lists and blogs, and did get cautioned that they still lived with the soviet mentality.

I would welcome finding a real genealogist that could find records of the 1800's and early 1900's..

Good luck,
Hello Elzbieta

I am trying to find out where my grandfather Andrew Kanon or Konon, came from so I can obtain his birth record/baptismal. Andrew Kanon came through Ellis Island when he was three years old in 1901, he was with his mother Josephine (Josefa) Kurowska and they came from Suwałki, they were going to Stefan Kanon I believe was his father. Grandfather would tell my mother that he came from Suwałki Gubernia, my father worked with him in the mines and my father would just say he came from a village that was now inside Russia about 10 miles from the Polish Russian border after World War II. Andrew Kanon's uncle I believe was John (Jan) Kanon on his naturalization came from Zabreczany Poland.

Hi,

https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zabreczany -- today Belarus. It is said in Polish wiki, that Zabreczany was part to gmina Balla Wielka, in voivodship Bialystok.
Then https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmina_Balla_Wielka indicates "Wsie" villages belonging to it. It's complicated, but in short powiat Augustowski (of either gubernia Suwalki, or voivodship Bialystok). After reading here and there, I arrived at Sopoćkinie https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopo%C4%87kinie in the bottom all villages are here.

Dekanat Sopoćkinie https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dekanat_Sopo%C4%87kinie
Then parish:
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parafia_Wniebowzi%C4%99cia_Naj%C5%9Bwi%C4%99tszej_Maryi_Panny_i_%C5%9Bw._Jozafata_Kuncewicza_w_Sopo%C4%87kiniach

On the parish page: "Od 1925 parafia należała do diecezji łomżyńskiej." - since 1925 parish was part to diocesis Lomza. Dead end.

https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/ has an entry Balla Wielka, nothing on line with the only exception year 1878, German records from Szczytno = Ortelsburg. Nothing of interest, Dead end.

Search for "Sopoćkinie parish" have an entry Church records, 1896-1914. (Microform, 1994) [WorldCat.org] http://www.worldcat.org/title/church-records-1896-1914/oclc/866165167
In Notes: Microfilm of original at Lithuanian State Historical Archive, Vilnius.
Orthodox Church records and civil registration books (births, marriages, and deaths) for Warsaw Consistory parishes of the Suvalki province, Russia. Localities include Labno (Łabno), Golynka (Hołynka), Sapotskin or Sopotskin (Sopoćkinie), and Ballya Tserkovnaya (Balla Kościelna or Ballaya Sol'naya), now in Belarus; and Rachki (Raczki) and Rigalovka (Rygałowlka), now in Poland.

That's all I could find. I am sorry, looks complicated.

Good morning!
I see "Suw Gub Poland", which can be Suwalki Gubernia. It does not give the place, but the administrative region, very close to Lithuania.
NB. I wonder if -ey is not Irish universal ending for all names
Elzbieta,

Thank you so much for making the comparison document. That was very kind of you. I had not spent a lot of time reviewing the marriage record but didn't catch the link to the Justice spelling the surname with the same "-ey" ending. How interesting the original signature is so different from the spelling the Justice used. Thankfully Antoni was able to write so he could leave us this clue
We had here on PO a number of records from Sejny county (small part of Suwalki Governorate), including today Lithuania, with names written in Polish. Why Lithuanian writing on the US document if the name was Polish?
But if Ewa was of Lithuanian ethnicity, the Lithuanian writing is obvious.

Re: searching in Polish records
It will be even more complicated, because you will have to deal with Cyrillic (for anything after 1868).

Elzbieta

Hi Elzbieta,

Thank you for providing additional details.

It looks to me that the mid-wife completed the birth certificate. The signature matches the other writing on the birth certificate. If the US town were they were living was a mix of Polish and Lithuanian perhaps that could explain the mix of Lithuanian and Polish?

It is a puzzle for certain - one I don't know if will ever be solved. The birth certificate also confirms that the family did have some additional children that likely died in infancy.

For folks with family from Suwalki Governorate - do they list Suwalki Governorate as the official place of birth using the place as it would have been in the 1860's?

This is my first experience with Suwalki Governorate.

Thank you,
Re: Suw, as Suwałki
I assumed yesterday, from the US document, that Suwalki was the place of birth.
It is not. On a US document it is the country of birth - Suwałki Governorate was the country of birth of Antoni and of Ewa.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suwa%C5%82ki_Governorate
The places of birth, for Ewa and for Antoni, are yet to be determined.

My 2nd great-grandparents are Polish/Lithuanian immigrants who arrived to the United States in the late 1890's. The family name is present day Murosky but has been spelled in many different ways over the years. Family stories indicate the name was previously Marauskas.

The only references I have had to the families origins are:

The 1910 United States Federal Census - country reference Russ-Poland
The 1920 United States Federal Census - country reference Lithuania-Rus
The 1930 United States Federal Census - country reference Lithuania

All three census locations are for Forest City, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania recently started to release the PA birth certificates. There is a birth certificate for my 2nd great uncle. This is the oldest record I have located for the family and it contains the older spelling - Marauskas. The birthplace for the parents Anthony and Eva is recorded.

The birth certificate is attached. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the birthplace may be? The name appears to be abbreviated.

Thank you,

Your attachement gives you the original name as Murauckas (Mu not Ma)
http://polishorigins.com/forum/files/42411_3421606190_0692_00200_214.jpg
But I think that "c" should be "s" - Google shows no single Murauckas, but a number of Murauskas.

The mother name in your record is Zilinskinte. But the Lithuanian ending for a young woman is -kaite, so I would correct it to Zilinskaite.
cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithuanian_name

For the both parents the birthplace is Suw as Suwałki. It is in the very North-East of Poland, circa 20 km to Lithuanian border.

Child: Frank Murauskas, born 18 May 1907, 4 pm
Father: Antoni Murauskas, 42 years -- BIRTH-ESTIMATE:1865
Mother: Ewa Zilinskaite, 33 years -- BIRTH-ESTIMATE:1874

I wish you success in finding more.
Suwalki are in public Polish archives http://szukajwarchiwach.pl/
Good luck. ~PL
