That is interesting. Unfortunately the description is not from a document, but a note in Geneteka. In the birth records my ancestors are either referred to as "osadnicy" or "gospodarz". However, in my great (x5) grandfather's death record it says: "łacina, k.161v, kolonista lat 44 korka".

Hi,
I have checked Janusz Stankiewicz database of surnames and could not find find Kolary or Kołary.
I even thought it could be Kotary, because sometimes indexers read 'ł' as a 't'. Not found and, besides that, lots of Kolary indexed in Geneteka. One of them had a note that the surname could be Cholary. Also not found in Stankiewicz database (as far as I know, based on Profesor Rymut's work).

I would suggest you to ask for William Hoffman's help in https://www.facebook.com/groups/Polish.Genealogy/ since he is an expert in polish surnames.

Apparently the surname "Kolar/Kolara" derives from Czech language and means "kołodziej" - "wheel-maker". "Kolary" may be a genitive case of "Kolar/Kolara". Can you show me that document or write what's exactly written there? And "kolonista" is polish word for "colonist" - and means a farmer who came from another village or built his house in a remote place slightly farther from the village itself. It may also mean the farmer who lived in a village which underwent "reorganization". There is many different reasons why someone was called a "kolonista".

As I have been moving up my family tree I discovered a branch with the surname of Kolary. From the Geneteka website I see this family name is from the Lodz area and in one death record of an ancestor it said "kolonista". I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the origins of this surname. Thank you!
