Thank you very much for explaining.
I did do a bit of exploring on the 2 sites yesterday, and I can see now, why certain words work and others don't.

Thanks again for all the help.
Hello, Bob.
At szukajwarchiwach.pl you need to search on parishes, not on surnames.
At BaSIA it is better to search using Extended search. Enter the surname Zdunowski and name Adalbert, select the place (Pleszew + 15 km) and years. Almost all found in Pleszew and Rokutów people are your relatives.

Wow, that is a lot of information.
Thank you for helping me.
I am always interested in history. History tells you so much more why you are you are, and why you do certain things.

@Diane: My mother has the official marriage certificate.

@Stanislaw: This information was totally unknown. But together with all the info, also from Natalia, that they lived near the german/russian border, give their stories, more background. And it starts to live.
I have my family tree at Ancestry. But I never found anything there, that could help me.
Is the wikitree better in that? That you can connect one part to another? Would make more sense.

@Natalia: Thank you again for the marriage certificate.
I tried to search anything at Basia, and found some Tomashewski's but not the "old generations".
At szukajwarchiwach.pl I searched on surnames, but I always got zero results. Except if I typed in idiot. Then I got some records.
Am I doing something wrong?

As last a word of thank from me and my mother, as well. She probably wondered even more where she came from.

thank you very much.

Rob,
I found Adalbert and Anna's marriage record.
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/11/744/0/2/26/skan/full/hSeZeC8-TYbTYBA3GioEiA
It says that Anna was born in Psienie. They both were living in Grodzisko. This village was located 2 km from the border of Germany and the Russian Empire. The border was on the Prosna river.
In this record there is the note that Anna Zdunowska died on 7.2.1941 in Bochum.

aarbee wrote:

I am very interested in how you found these birth certificates.

All this information I found on the site BaSIA - www.basia.famula.pl.
Yes and no.
It is possible.
But I know a few things very sure.
My grandmother was born in Germany, Bochum-Werne in 1910.
Adalbert worked there in the coalmine.
And I know, that his wife was a daughter of a big farmer.
They had luxery coaches with several horses. Lots of staff.
And know they did run away for the russian army.
My grandmother and her sister both spoke and understood, Polish and Russian language.
Adalbert was orphaned at 14.
His brothers left Poland (probably for America)

I think it is important to know where Anna Tomashewska was born.

I do not know exactly where the border was.
I have the impression, that Pleszew was a part of Germany, but close to the Russian part.

I am very interested in how you found these birth certificates.
Even though I am capable of reading German, but those high-German letters make me really wonder

I am very greatfull for your help.

I think they could have moved to south-east Poland after WWI.
Natalia,

Really thank you very much.

It is a completely different area, then I was told by my grandmother.
And I know that Adalbert and Anna had 4 children.
I only knew my grandmother and her sister Bronislawa, who we called Liesbeth.
I knew they had a boy who played the violin, which much be Stanislaw. He died young.
Siter Bolislawa only became 3 or 4 years old.
And I never new her name, only that she had been poisened.

Thanks to you it completes the puzzle a bit more.
Though the area is completely different as I was told.
They always said south-east Poland, which would be in the Ukrain by now, where I had found a river Pzinihia, which might sound in Polish, like my mother always said.

I also knew that Adalbert lost his parents at a young age, and he found work at the big farm of Anna her parents.

Thank you again.
Hello, Rob.
I found that Bronisława Zdunowska, daughter of Adalbert (Wojciech) Zdunowski and Anna Tomaszewska, was born in October, 1900 in Zawidowice, Pleszew parish. This is the scan of her birth certificate.
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/11/736/0/1/79/skan/full/WHjDboj3KQNdRl9qZGAUpA
She had brother Stanisław (born in 1904) and sister Bolesława (born in 1907).
Adalbert was born in 1876 in Piekarzew. His parents were Ignacy Zdunowski (abt. 1817 - 1877) and Agnieszka Danielewska (abt. 1837 - 1891). This is the scan.

I am momentarily looking for the birth area of my great grandfather and great grandmother.
On this moment I have no clue whether it is still in Poland, or whether it is now Ukraine.
This is what I found out through my mother.
Great Grandfather Adalbert Zdunowski
Great Grandmother Anna Tomaszewski

My Grandmother Maria Zdunowski was born in Bochum-Werne (Germany) in 1910. But her sister (Bronislawa) was born in 1900 in Poland.
They also had a brother with name Albert who played the violin and is in my knowledge born between 1901-1905.
What I also know is that they lived in South Eastern Poland.
And that 5-6 brothers of Adalbert left Poland between 1900 and 1910, bound for the USA.
My great Grandparents left because of the fact that they did not know where they belonged to. In Short today they speak Polish, and the other day Russian. They had Polish and Russian money. My Grandmother also told stories about Bolsjeviks, they where afraid of.

I only know the spoken word of the town/village or even the name of a big farm.
My mother always says they came from Spienje. In English it would sound like sjpeanje or sjpeenje.

Thanks Ahead,
