He was born in 1878 in Ka~ty, Gmina Maly Plock.
Where can I find a map of that area from the time period 1878-1900? I would like to see there his town was in relation to all the divisions and partitions of Poland. Thank you.

Tom,

During the period you specified Kąty was located in powiat kolneński, gubierna Łomżyńska of the Kingdom of Poland (Królestwo Polskie) aka Russian Poland aka the Russian Partition. To the north was the Kingdom of Prussia (a part of reunified Germany after 1871). To the east was gubierna Grodzieńska, an area of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzeczpostpolita Obojga Narodów) which had been directly incorporated into the Russian Empire following the partitions. From 1795 to 1807 the region was part of New East Prussia. From 1807 to 1815 the area was part of the Duchy of Warsaw (Księstwo Warszawskie). In 1815 the Congress of Vienna transferred control of the area to Russia, which set up the semi-autonomous Kingdom of Poland (Królestwo Polskie) with the czar of Russia as king. Until after the 1830s the kingdom was known as the Congress Kingdom of Poland (Kongresowe Królestwo Polskie). The Austrian Partition aka Galicia was to the south of the Kingdom of Poland.

Attached is a map of powiat kolneński and a map of the powiaty of the Kingdom of Poland. The map is found on the PGSA website. However, access is limited to members of the society. The map dates from the first decade of the 20th Century but is valid for the dates you specified.

I hope that this provides the information you needed.

Wishing you continued success in your research,
