Thanks Mike. I've ordered a hard copy of Jakob Maczka's naturalization record. I'm hoping this will provide stronger clues.
If you happen to narrow your search to Medrzechow or Wulka Gradzka, I can look through those records for you. Just glancing however, the names Maczka and Narog don't seem to come from this area.
Hi Matt,

I notice the 1920 census shows Jacob had submitted his papers for naturalization. The 1930 census shows him as a naturalized citizen.

Family Search has naturalization records available for Hennepin County, Minnesota which is where they were living per both census records.

Here is the link if you would like to start browsing through them. His naturalization papers will provide the location of his birth and other specifics. Once you nail down his village of birth, we can then look for records in Poland.

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/2524799?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Alternatively, you can order his naturalization papers through the link provided on his Ancestry.com naturalization index

Happy hunting,
I'm wondering if it could it be Wólka Miedzyńska — abbreviated as 'Wulka Miedza' on the manifest? If so, this is too far north to be in the Galacia area, I believe. I'm leaning more toward your speculation of Mędrzechów. Do some of these cities have records that might be useful. Probably not digitized, I imagine.

Thank you Cynthia and Sophia! I have NOT seen these sailing manifests. These are very helpful indeed —THANK YOU! The 1920 US Census showed that Jakob came to US in 1903 (but he could have told this by mistake as it was actually 1902) but the 1930 US Census shows his immigration year as 1910. FYI: Jakob's second son after Frank (Josef Maczka - my grandfather) was born in Minneapolis in 1909 followed by his sisters Mary and Julia — 1910 and 1916 respectively.

Hi Cynthia,
Tough one! It is not written the same way, the various times it appears on the 1910 list. However, I do clearly see the ending as "drz" so perhaps Wulka Miedrz. So, what is that, really? With proper spelling, Wulka is Wólka. It is possible that Miedrz is abbreviated, so you might look at Wólka Niedźwiedzka. Also look at Gmina Mędrzechów in which there is a Wola Mędrzechów as well as a Wólka Grądzka. One thing that I tried was to use the Steven Morse "Gold Form" and as a search term (leaving surname blank) use "Wulka M" for the box "Town Name Starts With or Is". When you do that, you get a few creative spellings that might support the Gmina Mędrzechów idea. What do you think?
Hello Matt,

You may already have these passenger lists (see attached). It seems Jacob came to the US alone in 1902. He returned to Poland for a visit and came back to the US once again alone in 1910.

The 1902 passenger list shows him as married and his final destination is New York. His last residence in Poland is listed as Wulka.

The 1910 list shows his birth and residence in Poland as Wulka???. There is another word after Wulka that I cannot decipher. It also lists his nearest relative in Poland in 1910 as his wife Jozefa Maczka also living in Wulka???. This means Jozefa came to the US between April 1910 and the census of 1920. Jakob returned to the US alone in March 1910. This list also indicates he was previously in the US in 1902 in Minneapolis - this links the two passenger lists and confirms they are both the same Jakob Maczka.

I am attaching both passenger lists to this forum thread so that other members of the community can decipher the residence and place of birth especially for 1910 list.

Best,
I'm seeking more information on my great grandfather, Jacob Maczka, who was apparently from the Galacia region of Poland / Austria and was born around 1870. We have hard evidence that he was a member of the Austrian calvary. We also know that he married Josephine Narog and had one child (Frank Maczka, born 1902) before emigrating to the United States in 1903. We have shreds of evidence that Jacob Maczka's father's name might be John but nothing concrete. If anyone has any information or resources to share, please let me know.
