At the beginning of 20th century, the peak decade of immigration were the years 1901-1910. At that time about 8.7 million people arrived in the United States. The culmination of this immigration was in the years of the great economic depression at the end of the 1920s, which affected most of the European countries and the United States, as well. This seems to be the $1,000,000 question for a lot of us.
Take a look at the "emigration" topic in the Forum for some good information.

It would appear that Ostroleka was located in the Russian controlled section of Poland,( north of Warsaw & west of Bialystok) for the time frame you mentioned. There was a lot of persecution of Poles during that time, and some uprisings against the Russian authority by the Polish nationals.In 1905 there was a major riot in Warsaw against the Russian authorities, and many hundreds of Polish citizens were killed.

So a great number of Poles immigrated for their freedom from persecution.

If your family were farmers, they may have wanted to own their own land, which was not possible in Poland. So many left for that freedom.
Basically , most left for some kind of freedom. I hope this helps you a little.

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this topic but I finally found a relative of my Great-Great-Grandfather, Leopold. I post a topic back then about finding vital information in Ostroleka, Poland. This relative sent me a box with pictures of Leopold and his family and her family. She also sent me a photocopy of Leopold's naturalization certificate and a marriage certificate.

To my surprise, my Leopold and his wife did not get married in Poland. They got married in London, England in the 1903. They did not leave London for America until 1909. I have been trying to figure out and find information why would they leave Ostroleka, Poland at young age and get married in England instead? Any ideas?
