Hi,

To search on the Poznan Project for Praxida (Polish: Prakseda) the most effective method would be to scroll down on the first names of brides and choose “none of the above”. Pull down “Additional Criteria” and choose a more narrow time period. (Wisniewski is too common a surname to search the period from 1800 to 1899. There are too many matches.) I used that method for the years 1850-1890 for the entire territory and 5 women with the name Praxida or Praxedes or Praxides turned up. The version of the name can appear as Praxida, Praxidae, f. when it is treated as a First Declension noun and as Praxedes, Praxedis, f. or Praxides, Praxidis, f. when it is treated as a Third Declension noun. The bottom line is that all three are versions of the same name. This is not unusual with names which were not commonly used. Another good example is the Latin form of the name Kunegunda. It appears as Cunegundis, Cunegundis, f. when it is treated as a Third Declension noun and as Cunegunda, Cunegundae, f. when it is treated as a First Declension noun.

Since Prakseda is not number one on the hit parade of the most popular names for girls in the USA it is no surprise that your relative was called Mary. Although in our contemporary society uncommon names are often favored, through at least the first half of the 20th Century individuals who had an uncommon first name often used a more common name in order to make life in the USA easier.

Although BaSIA can be helpful if the genealogy gods are smiling, it is very much a work in progress. Like many genealogy indeces BaSIA is the work of volunteers and new records are indexed with some regularity but many (perhaps most) records cannot be found there at the present time.

Please help decipher this name in the attached file. It is a feminine name

It appears to be Praxida?

It's important because I haven't been able to find my one relative's baptism, but I've seen her go by Mary
