Hi,

You are correct. No surname appears in the record for the child and his parents. (Although surnames do appear for both sponsors, commonly known as godparents.) Even during the late 18th Century not all Polish peasants had/used a surname.

Merry Christmas.
Hi,

The text reads: "sponsus liber sponsa sub potestate parentum" which is translated: "the groom is free/emancipated (from parental control); the bride is under the control/authority of (her) parents." The parents of the bride are living. It is not clear whether the parents of the groom are still alive or not. He may be emancipated because he is living on his own, although his parents are alive, or because his parents are deceased.
For the death of Matthew Zulke #80 in the attachment, does anything indicate he is a widow?

Hi,

The given name of the deceased is Maciej (Eng.: Mathias) rather than Mateusz (Eng.: Matthew). In Latin the two given names are quite similar—Mathias and Mathaeus (also spelled Matthaeus). However, they are two distinct names and are not interchangeable. To answer your original question...He was a widower. (That info is found in the column with the heading “Status Mortui”/State of Life/Condition/ Status/etc. of the deceased. The Latin word for a widower is viduus, vidui, m. and appears in that column. The record also states that he died of “hydrops”, which during the 19th Century was commonly known as dropsy and today is called edema. The final column lists his surviving children: Krystyna (Eng.: Christine), Marcin (Martin), Katarzyna (Catherine), Maryanna, Dorota (Eng.: Dorothy), and Andrzej (Andrew). That column also states that he was a pauper at the time of his death.

I hope this helps you.

Hi,

It does state that both parents of the bride gave consent and thus were alive at the time of the wedding. The Latin is: Cum consensu parentum sponsae—"with the consent of the parents of the bride." Parentum is the Genitive Plural form of the noun parens and thus includes both the mother & the father of the bride.
