Hi Henryk

Many months ago you posted advice for me to contact some people on a Polish genealogy website (you gave me the link) re the parish for Ponikiew Wielka . Something is not working and I am not able to register on the website and contact those people. Do you know if there is any other way to contact them outside of the website?

My guess is that at least one can communicate. If you can't find some one to do Polish letters for you, send both an English version and a google translated Polish version. Give information about your relationship with your ancestors. Perhaps they can find some relatives living there for you.

So much great info - thanks a lot. I'm a big LDS user so - too bad about that! I'm thinking the people you listed are all in Poland. Should i assume that they could communicate with me in English?

The 1880s Geographic Dictionary of Poland lists that parish. It was founded in the 11th century.

P.S. Do you know how I could find out if Rozan was the parish for Ponikiew Wielka back in the 1870's? I'm wondering if i could get records om microfilm from there for that time period

Perhaps Ponikiew Wielka, although it is far from Toruń.
Ponikiew Wielka -population 68; woj. mazowieckie, pow. makowski, gmina Czerwonka (originally Perzanowo). Parish Różan. 50 km north of Warszawa.

Weelka either is Wielka or Wielki, but there are thousands of places named like that. So your focus must be on something that sounds like Poniket (maybe Pa~niket?). I was not able to find any in KP province, in http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~polkujaw/county.htm

Sorry - I'm still new at this. I accidentally posted the following as a reply to an old topic - oops! Here it is where it should be, as a new topic:

Some of my Polish ancestors were born in the northeast part of Russia-Poland, supposedly not far from Torun. Only one family member ever indicated his exact birthplace on a document - most of them simply wrote "Russia-Poland". This particular person put "Poniket Weelka" as his birthplace on his WWII Draft Registration form. I'm not great at Polish, but it seems like it was probably spelled phonetically. I was wondering if anyone has a guess as to what the real name of this place might be???
