That is what we (my siblings and cousins) called our grandma who emigrated from Poland. I know that there are other Polish words for grandmother that seem to be used more. I have heard people wonder if it's a regional thing, but I don't know. On the English-Polish translator at poltran.com I was given the words Babka, Babcia, Babunia, Baba. For grandfather there was only one - Dziadek, but we called my grandfather Dzia Dzia. So, in other words, I believe the seated woman is one of my great aunts. Happy to answer your question. - Cheri

I love this home. Unfortunately, I can't identify the place. I would guess that the seated woman is one of my Busia's (Aniela Lenart) sisters.

Do you have photos of the homes of your Polish Peasant ancestors? In this section we are looking for photos that captured the outside or inside of your ancestor's homes.

Please share them with us!

I have attached a photo of my ancestor's home near Drohobycz or Boryslaw. My great-uncle Frank Ferenc visited his family there in 1930. Click on the photo to see larger image.
