To commemorate the 100 anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, National Digital Archives shared online nearly 750 unpublished photographs from the years 1914 to 1918!

The photos include for example portraits of the soldiers, important historical events such as the Battle of Gorlice. Moreover landscapes of Galicia, Slovakia, Volhynia, Podolia and Bessarabia, views of Przemysl, Kraków and Kielce, documentation of the war damages and more...

The chosen photos are here:
While I was working on our latest blog article about World War I cemeteries in Western Galicia, I found this great webiste with German war postcards collection:

http://www.allworldwars.com/German-World-War-I-Postcards-Part-I.html

There are some amazing photos from the Western and Eastern front lines. Definitely worth seeing!
Here are some examples:

And my article about war cemeteries is available here: http://blog.polishorigins.com/2014/07/17/war-cemeteries-in-western-galicia/

Many thanks Shellie.
Just browsed it, and read explanation.

Below is a little excerpt from the introduction.
The project "albom.pl" has been sponsored by Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And also helped by the District of Hajnówka.
I added the year, those young people do not know (yet) that it is an important parameter.

Best,
Twarde rezultaty

W lipcu, sierpniu i wrześniu [2013] zjeździliśmy siedem pogranicznych miejscowości. Najpierw w Polsce: Kleszczele i Gródek.

Solid results

In July, August and September [2013] we drove across seven frontier villages. First in Poland: Kleszczele and Gródek. Then in Belarus: Sopoćkinie, Łunnę, Wołpę, Wołkowysk i Kamieniec. [NOTE geography] We chose it because of the rich history, cultural diversity and small amount of photographic material in the national archives, and also because we had guides.

We visited over 60 homes. We recorded nearly 2,300 archival photographs from the private collections of 44 residents and 3 collections of fans of old photographs .

We often had the impression that it’s the last minute, or even too late. Last witnesses of the war are dying, it’s more and more difficult to get comments on the photos. Younger (especially in Belarus ) do not attach importance to the outdated history, just throw the papers in the trash. In the 1990s most of the villages have been visited by junk dealers. Purchased images have gone out into the world, but stripped of history, anonymous. Many of the photos were destroyed because they were uncomfortable testimony ("waste paper " of the Jewish houses have been burned), or dangerous evidences ( for the photo in Polish military uniform one could hit Siberia) .

In the albom.pl website we have included selection of nearly 800 scanned photos. Most of our interviewees had nothing against capturing our visit with a camera – some fragments of recordings are also available on the site. The chronicle records of expedition have been added on our Facebook (profile albom.pl). In December [2013], the photographic book "Albom.pl" has been published, which is an artistic summary of the project.
Today I stumbled across this website http://www.album.nowytarg.pl/en/node/15 This is the English version of the site but the captions are still in Polish. You’ll find here an archival photo album resulting from a special exhibit put together at the Muzeum Podhalańskie im. Czesława Pajerskiego w Nowym Targu. The photos are historical prior to 1945, mostly from 1900-1945 and only some are dated. There are over 800 so they are divided by portraits, architecture, events, etc. Enjoy! ~PL

A Polish friend showed me a great website with old photos from around the world. I believe it is in Ukrainian, but I used google translate to view all of the topics. Here is the link to "Poland 1932 color photographs. The National Digital Archive (http://www.nac.gov.pl/en/node/5 recently launched their Facebook profile at https://www.facebook.com/narodowe.archiwum.cyfrowe
(in Polish only)
They regularly upload photos devoted to a particular subject, e.g. today's album is called "na ludowo" (hard to translate as a standalone phrase: perhaps "folk-wise")

The theme last Sunday was "The brass band"

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150602892124032.388775.308958934031&type=1

The albums are public and you do not need to log in to Facebook to view them.

                                      Hello Shellie and Everyone,
I am a relatively new forum member and definitely new team member
Here is a link to an interesting website devoted to photographs of old Puławy, a town on the Vistula River in the Lublin Province. The name is pronounced poo-WAH - vey
This is the website: http://dawnepulawy.pl/index.php
Google Translator can help you navigate the site if your Polish is not up to scratch
In case you wonder what Nowa Alexandria means in relation to Puławy, the town was renamed so by the Russians in the 19th century - to honor the tzar Alexander II.

The photographs also show places close to Puławy, e.g. Kazimierz Dolny, a beautiful town that used to be a Polish-Jewish shtetl until WW2. Here is one from a collection of photos taken by Germans in Kazimierz in 1942:

More old photos from Kazimierz Dolny: http://dawnepulawyalter.jalbum.net/Kazimierz%20Dolny%20na%20starej%20fotografii./

This site: www.karnet.krakow.pl is where I found the two photos from Zakopane, and a Christmas photo link which I placed on the Tis the Season forum. I found that you could get this site in English, and I did go on the site map, but so far I didn't find many more old photos. Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone is able to navigate the site, and find more than I did.

THANK YOU JOZEFS! These are great sites. I can't believe how many photos there are for all of the Polish villages and towns. For members like me who can't read Polish, here is the link to each site with the google translation option. Remember that this will also translate the town names, but you can hold your cursor over the translated town name to see the original Polish name.
You can try: "stare zdjęcia", "stare fotografie", "zdjęcia naszych przodków", "fotografie naszych przodków" (in general, "zdjęcia" and "fotografie" can be used interchangeably), "stare pocztówki" (postcards), "zdjęcia/pocztówki z XIX wieku", "stare zdjęcia/pocztówki miasta".
