Are there any genealogists here or others that can advise on how to research who priests were in the 1800s? Anything you can tell me about these types of situations during this time?
Or, can anyone share their experience with discovering that a priest fathered an ancestor?

Hello,

I'm researching an ancestral line where a priest may have been a biological father. Or, the father may have been someone closely tied to the church in some way. This would have been in the mid-1800s. Any ideas on on what type of person it could be if not a priest?

Does anyone have experience researching this type of situation?

I imagine that a priest would not want it to be known that he fathered a child. I'm wondering how to go about researching to determine a priest's name in the village. Would the parish have a book of priests and when they served?

What was required to be a priest in the mid-1800s? It seems that they would have to be educated and literate. Who were allowed to be priests?

This person may have had a chapel in their home or on their property. What kind of people would have this type of privilege?

Thanks!
