I meant Kositza

Thank you, Sophia. Yes, I made a mistake I meant Kositza. I asked this question because one of my Ancestors was born with the name Kositza but her older sister was born with the name Kozica. I attached a picture where you can see what I mean. Maria is the older sister and Susanna is one of my ancestors. The mother from both are the same but I think because the name from Susanna was changed that is why it says her father is unknown.

Hi Jan and Dave,
If I were to use the rules of pronunciation for Polish, and say "Kozica," it would not have exactly the same sound as if I were to use the rules of pronunciation for German, and say "Kostiza."

and click on the "listen" icon. The sound made in Polish for "z" followed by "i" is not a sound that is used in German. So, if a German-speaking person had to approximate the name Kozica using German spelling, they might come up with "Kozitza" or "Kositza." Neither one hits it quite right, and "Kostiza" is even farther off. You can check how these sound, by going to that same google translate link and changing the language to German, and changing the spelling of the name.
I am guessing that the root of your question (for this name and for the other you posted) really comes from wondering whether a name you saw written in German (or other?) records could be a Polish person whom you are researching. If that is the case, then I think it is reasonable to think that a "Kositza" or "Kozitza" record entry might indeed be your Kozica (as Dave says, no guarantee), whether because it is phonetically almost-there or because it is a misspelling.

Hi Jan,

Kozica is a Polish Surname. According to Hoffman’s Polish Surnamnes: Origins & Meanings it is derived from the word for a goat, koza, and has the specific meaning of “chamois”. In 1998 760 individuals in Poland used that surname. Chamois is a product made from the skin of goats or sheep and has long been used as a drying towel for automobiles since it is absorbent and does not damage finishes.

It sounds like kositza could be the German phonetic version of the Polish name but no guarantees on that opinion.

Hello is Kozica a polish surname and if it is a polish surname what is the meaning of it? And my second question is do you know if Kositza is the germanized form of Kozica?
